As an Elder Brother: Chapter 3

Elder Brother Chapter 3

It was difficult to discern He Tingzhou’s expression in the darkness. Xu Feng watched him ponder in silence, his heart pounded in his chest without him realizing, and he just knew that he didn’t believe what he’d said. The back of his clothing had long already been stained with sweat, thinking about how long he’d been planning, and knowing that soon there would be an opportunity to escape, however, he couldn’t let this moment ruin all that he had worked for.

With his heart in a jumble, he simply knelt down, his face lightly touching the lower hem of He Tingzhou’s clothing.

He Tingzhou came back to his senses, and said while stunned, “What are you doing?”

Xu Feng held in the disgust in his heart, and also softened his tone, then said, “I have not attended to the Palace Master for a while.”

As he spoke, he went to undo He Tingzhou’s belt.

He Tingzhou didn’t like it when he acted like a piece of wood on the bed, instead, he really liked it more when he used his mouth to serve him. At first, Xu Feng vowed to die rather than to obey, but after He Tingzhou unhinged his lower jaw, he accomplished the matter. Afterward, he vomited for a while, and for the next couple of days, he couldn’t get any food down. This time he was willing to take the initiative to perform this shameful act, which naturally took a significant amount of determination.

Unexpectedly when He Tingzhou heard these words, his face actually changed color quite a bit, Xu Feng had just grazed his belt, and it was as if a clean as ice and pure as jade[1] young girl was being taken advantage of by a Deng Tuzi[2], both startled and angry, he kicked his foot out towards Xu Feng.

The foot hit him smack-dab in the chest, Xu Feng stumbled back a couple of steps, and with a ‘bang’, he bumped into the soft couch that was on the side, making a loud noise.

Xu Feng lay askew on the couch, shocked beyond description, it was truly indescribable. Coming from the Palace Master of the Ji Le Palace, whom, according to everyone, was lecherous and shameless, without a single inkling of purity left. Now when he offered himself up as a pillow, he was actually kicked away by the foot of the Palace Master, how could it not be surprising? Even Jin Shu who had come in to move the light was stunned.

He Tingzhou had been momentarily desperate, which was why he’d kicked Xu Feng away, and as he looked at the deathly pallor of his face as he lay askew on the couch, he felt both regret and an ache come from within his heart, he then said while scrambling up, “Are you okay? Were you hurt?”

Xu Feng was confused by his cold and then hot[3] attitude and didn’t make a sound for a while.

He Tingzhou was afraid that he had suffered an internal injury, so he took his palm and placed it on his chest, and slowly transferred over his internal energy.

After Xu Feng had taken the antidote, his martial arts had already recovered by more than half, this time he could feel a strand of zhenqi[4] work its way around inside his body, originally there were a couple of barriers that couldn’t be broken through, yet all of them were overcome, one by one, leading him to experience an unspeakable peace of mind.

He Tingzhou saw that his complexion had improved, so he finally stopped worrying, and as he supported him and settled him down in position on the couch, he said, “It’s getting late, you should rest well first, as for other matters… no need to think too much about them.”

He spoke in a very roundabout way, which made Xu Feng even more confused after hearing it. He thought the Palace Master never usually practiced moderation when it came to his lasciviousness, there had been whole nights where he played around with two, and even three people, yet these last couple of months he hadn’t touched him at all, could it be that he was impotent?

He Tingzhou didn’t know what sort of thoughts were going through his head, seeing him stare blankly back at him, he couldn’t help but feel distressed again, so he reached out his hand, yet didn’t dare touch his face, and just said with a sigh, “Wait a bit, for the time being, after a few days have passed, I will tell you everything.”

What did he want to tell him?

And as for his excessive desire to indulge in pleasure, was that already quenched?

If that was true, he would certainly have to go out and buy some firecrackers to celebrate.

Xu Feng thought about this matter wholeheartedly and hadn’t even noticed when He Tingzhou had left. On the other hand, Jin Shu was weighed down with worries, he was deeply afraid that he had offended the Palace Master again, so Xu Feng had to try every way to persuade him, to coax him into feeling more at ease, then he laid down and went to sleep.

He slept until midnight when he heard a ‘pu’ sound of something hitting the window, it turned out someone was tapping on the window with rocks.

Xu Feng quickly woke up, he clambered out of bed with a single movement, then pushed open the window and peered outside, a slender figure standing in the moonlight could be seen, the wind was ruffling her skirt, and she had unparalleled beauty.

Xu Feng was overjoyed, and called out in a low voice, “Clan Master[5] Liu!”

Liu Yue took light, graceful steps, and walked up to the window in a lithe and delicate manner, then she asked while smiling, “Silly boy, the Palace Master isn’t in your room, right?”

Xu Feng’s face heated up, and he said, “Of course not.”

“I heard that recently you’ve become the favorite, the Palace Master swings by the Cui Zhu Pavilion day after day, I’m afraid that I might run into him if I’m not careful, so much so that I don’t dare come around to visit you.”

As for being the favorite, even Xu Feng couldn’t think it through clearly, so he just glanced over it by saying a couple sentences of ambiguous mutterings.

Liu Yue didn’t dig deeper either, and just said, “As for the matter you entrusted to me, it has been taken care of.”

Xu Feng said happily, “Really?”

“On the night of the fifteenth of the eighth month, during the sacrifice to the moon within the palace, all the guards around will be relatively more lax, and there will only be two people guarding the road to the steep cliff, so if you have the skill, there is a good chance you can avoid them and go.”

“Many thanks for Clan Master Liu’s aid.” Xu Feng replied with sincerity.

“No need to thank me. But in the dead of the night, what are you planning on doing by going to the edge of the steep cliff?”

Xu Feng had hardened himself for the past three years inside of the Ji Le Palace, and had actually acquired a skill, he could lie without batting an eyelid, “Have I not already spoken about this with Clan Master Liu? That year when Ji Zhong was experiencing a massive drought, my parents passed away at exactly this particular time, all I want is to find somewhere I can be alone to remember them.”

Liu Yue didn’t know whether to believe him or not, she blinked her eyes, and said half in jest, “I am only afraid that you might take things too hard for a moment, and leap off a steep cliff, if that comes to pass, where will I find another beauty to compensate the Palace Master?”

Xu Feng’s expression dimmed a bit, and said, “If I wanted to commit suicide, I would have just gotten it over with and died three years ago, then there would have been no need to live in degradation up till now.”

“You were really stupid back in those days, all for Mu Rong Fei, who you had no reason to help, such that you dared to offend our Palace Master. It really was because of your foolish stubbornness, that I was willing to help you out and leave you alive within an inch of your life.”

Xu Feng quickly thanked her again.

Liu Yue’s gaze wandered, and she chuckled, “Why do you still call me Clan Master Liu? Are you unable to call me a good Jie Jie?”

No matter how much Xu Feng’s skin had thickened, he was unable to utter the phrase, “good Jie Jie”.

Liu Yue stopped teasing him, and said firmly, “Now that you are the Palace Master’s favorite, when it comes to the day of the sacrifice to the moon on the fifteenth, it could be that the Palace Master will choose you to be his dual cultivation partner.”

The Ji Le Palace practiced an unorthodox type of martial arts that involved dual cultivation between two married ones, practicing on the day of the moon ceremony on the fifteenth, was especially effective, and the benefits were boundless, thus from every grandmaster, down to concubines and servants, everyone wanted to gain the Palace Master’s favor that day.

But this year wouldn’t be the same.

Xu Feng smiled darkly, and thought to himself, “I am afraid that your Palace Master is already impotent, who can he be intimate with anymore?

However, if he spoke those words out loud, he feared that before the fifteenth even arrived, he would first be silenced with death by the Palace Master. As a result, he endured and didn’t bring it up, so he said, “I have never practiced the martial arts of the Ji Le Palace, so of course I am unable to practice dual cultivation with the Palace Master.”

Liu Yue made an ‘ah’ sound, at this point she remembered that his martial arts had already been crippled by the Palace Master, and her eyes couldn’t help but reveal pity.

Xu Feng simply acted naively the whole time, he held his tongue regarding the fact that he’d taken an antidote, and that he had already recovered his martial arts by more than half. He was no longer the chivalrous, stupid child from three years ago, and didn’t dare to casually trust anyone else.

Liu Yue joked with him again for a bit, and just as she had arrived, she lithely and delicately left.

However, Xu Feng wasn’t very sleepy anymore, he looked at the blue horizon beyond the window, and reached out and grasped the empty air. He had yearned every day, to escape from the depraved hole that was the Ji Le Palace, but now, it was only a step away.

The days passed by quickly and day-by-day the weather grew cooler.

He Tingzhou visited the Cui Zhu Pavilion daily like before, but after the day when Xu Feng gave him a scare, he no longer dared to stay too late. Xu Feng presumed that it was because he was suffering from an unmentionable illness, and could no longer perform those deviant acts. So, during the time he spent with him, he had lowered his guard.

Come to think of it, it was strange, if he was slightly more amiable, the Palace Master would reveal an expression of overwhelming joy, and if it weren’t for the fact that Xu Feng had first-hand knowledge of his exceedingly cruel way of doing things, he would have simply thought that his feelings for him had grown deeper.

It wasn’t easy to endure till the day of the fifteenth, Xu Feng woke up and took a look, it was a gorgeously clear day. The autumn weather was clear and refreshing, and there were no clouds for thousands of miles, if this continued till nighttime, the moonlight would also be very good.

Jin Shu made a round outside, and unexpectedly wore a deep frown when he came back. Xu Feng found out when he asked, it turned out that the Palace Master had selected Young Master Lin to serve him that day. Young Master Lin was originally a child from a wealthy family, but because he fell for the Palace Master’s good looks, he had gone as far as to voluntarily come to the Ji Le Palace to become a male concubine. Xu Feng had seen him from afar several times, his looks and manner truly exceeded those beside him, so it wasn’t strange that the Palace Master had selected him.

However, Jin Shu was very dissatisfied and said straightforwardly that his own young master really hadn’t had his heart set on it, such that he handed over such a good opportunity for no good reason. Xu Feng only thought about running away at night, where would he have the capacity to be love rivals with someone else? So he just absentmindedly placated him with a couple of phrases.

The fifteenth of the eighth month was originally the Mid-Autumn Festival[6], but at the Ji Le Palace, it held another significance. They held a ceremony to sacrifice to the moon, after which the Palace Master practiced dual cultivation with a married one whom he had chosen, others would indulge in pleasure to their hearts’ content. It didn’t matter if it was the Palace Master’s concubine or a disciple of the palace, as long as they were to each other’s liking, they could reciprocally experience sexual pleasure, not even the Palace Master would be an exception.

Xu Feng hated such salacious affairs to the extreme, the sky had not darkened yet when he tightly closed the door to his room, he had already sent Jin Shu away, so he sat alone waiting in his room. He mulled over the escape route several times, and was not aware of any danger of anything going wrong, so he proceeded to wait till the moon was in the middle of the sky before taking action. Who would’ve known that when the sky started to darken, there would be a flurry of knocking on the door coming from outside?

The ‘knock knock knock’ sound felt as if they were knocking on his heart, which startled him so much that he sprung to his feet, and asked, “Who is it?”

“It is me.” It was the voice of He Tingzhou.

Xu Feng quietly groaned, but he couldn’t open the door no matter what, so he assumed a drowsy and sleepy manner, and said, “I have already gone to bed, the Palace Master should come back tomorrow.”

He Tingzhou was quiet, he replied softly with a ‘mn’, and sure enough stopped knocking on the door, soon afterward, there was a loud crash, it turned out that he’d just directly kicked the door down and entered.

To feign sleep, Xu Feng had long extinguished the candle inside the room, but the moon on this night was very bright, and the moonlight flooded the room brightly, it illuminated He Tingzhou’s snowy-white face, he had long brows and sharp eyes, and his refinery and elegance were without peer. He strode into the room, casting a sidelong glance at Xu Feng, and asked, “Why are you sleeping so early?”

He took another measuring look at Xu Feng, and said strangely, “Yet, your clothes are still on properly.”

Xu Feng’s whole body chilled, he braced himself and said, “I presumed that the Palace Master would come today, so I was waiting for it this whole time.”

These words of his were contradictory, and yet, He Tingzhou didn’t doubt him, instead, he took another step inside. Xu Feng could smell the scent of alcohol and knew that he’d been drinking.

“Is the Palace Master drunk?”

He Tingzhou smiled faintly, and said, “If I didn’t drink some alcohol, I wouldn’t have dared to come and find you.”

“The Palace Master has already selected someone else to dual cultivate with, why would you come here to me?”

He Tingzhou looked at the bright moon outside of the window, and said while grasping Xu Feng’s hand, “It’s the night of the Mid-Autumn family reunion[7] if I didn’t come to see you, then who else would I go see?”

As he spoke, he reached out his arms and held Xu Feng in a full embrace.

Xu Feng was unprepared, so he couldn’t help but stumble back a couple of steps and was conveniently pressed onto the bed. Continuing, he could feel the other man’s fingers feeling his face, as he muttered, “Your appearance is really like… It’s laughable that I couldn’t recognize…”

Did he mean to say that he looked like a certain person?

Xu Feng felt uncertain, yet He Tingzhou held him even tighter, he could hear him talking next to his ear, “I have been separated from my family since my childhood, being brought to the Ji Le Palace by my master, and learning the rules of the Ji Le Palace, I have always done as I pleased, only caring about my own happiness.”

“That day when I happened to meet you on the public road, if I had used the sword and had killed you…” As soon as he mentioned the word “kill”, his voice started to tremble ferociously, and it seemed as if he couldn’t continue speaking, after a moment of silence, he said, “Then there would have been nothing for the future.”

His voice gradually became lower, “It is a pity…”

Xu Feng waited for quite a while, yet he couldn’t see what was such a pity, he turned and took a look, but saw that He Tingzhou had already fallen asleep leaning on him, with the smell of alcohol on his breath. His hand was still caressing Xu Feng’s cheek, like the close and intimate acts of a lover.

Xu Feng felt a burst of hatred in his heart and quickly swatted the hand away. He looked outside the window at the color of the sky, it was already time to leave, but because he was afraid that He Tingzhou was tricking him, he didn’t dare up carelessly, and just gently pushed him away a few times, then he cried out, “Palace Master!”

He Tingzhou was in a deep sleep, the moonlight fell upon his dark hair, which was as black as ink, his neck was slender and fair. Xu Feng looked at his sleeping countenance, and suddenly came up with an idea, he thought, “Why don’t I take this opportunity to kill this perverted crook who does all kinds of evil deeds?”

If he couldn’t accomplish this, then there was no doubt that there was only death, besides, even if he got lucky and succeeded, he feared that he wouldn’t be able to run from the clutches of the Ji Le Palace. But if he could have the chance to get his revenge, why would he need to care about that?

There weren’t any sharp blades in the room, so Xu Feng looked around, and happened to see the candle holder that was placed on the table. He freed himself and got off the bed, then pulled off the candle and held the candle holder in his hand. The candle holder was sharp on one end, and if he used it with some inner strength, it would be enough to kill a person.

Xu Feng’s heart started pounding fast, he didn’t dare delay another moment and walked to the edge of the bed step-by-step. His lame right hand hung down by the side of his body, he raised his left land high and stabbed towards He Tingzhou’s chest…

It was at this moment, He Tingzhou suddenly opened his eyes.

Xu Feng’s hand immediately froze in midair.

He Tingzhou’s eyes sparkled, it looked like he was still somewhat drunk, and he looked at Xu Feng. He clearly saw the sharp tool in Xu Feng’s hand, and yet he didn’t say even a word, he just very slowly, very slowly smiled, his eyes were filled with gentleness and softness. Afterward, he just closed his eyes and continued to sleep deeply.

The room was still and quiet.

Xu Feng couldn’t tell if He Tingzhou was really drunk or if he was faking it, he clutched the candle holder in his hand firmly, nevertheless, he couldn’t stab him. A bead of sweat rolled off the tip of his nose, and dropped onto the hair on He Tingzhou’s temple, under the moonlight it shone brilliantly, making it seem as if it were a teardrop.

Xu Feng’s heart trembled, the candle holder in his hand fell, and tumbled into the corner of the bed, making a loud and clear ‘clang’. He was greatly startled, and raised his eyes to look at the person on the bed, he saw that He Tingzhou was still fast asleep and hadn’t woken up, he hadn’t even raised an eyelid.

As long as someone practiced martial arts, they should be very sensitive to noises, how drunk did he have to be, to have this level of non-reactiveness?

Xu Feng felt that this situation was all the more strange, and didn’t even dare bend over to pick up the candle holder, once he was two or three steps away from the edge of the bed, he hastily scrambled out the door. He presumed that if the Palace Master was faking being drunk, he was sure to have immediately dispatched someone to catch him but other than scaring apart a couple of mandarin ducks[8], in the end, nothing happened. When he reached the path by the cliffside, he saw what Liu Yue had spoken about, there were only two people keeping watch. And because it was the dead of the night, the two people were drowsy, and they were lax as they stood guard.

When Xu Feng reached this point, he finally calmed down once again, he picked up a rock and held it in his hand, and cast a hidden weapon technique to throw it, he took advantage of when those two were distracted and put his qinggong to good use to move past them. His skill in martial arts was average, to begin with, and after not cultivating for three long years, as a matter of fact, it wasn’t very smooth, but luckily those two people were also mediocre at martial arts, so they actually didn’t sense his presence at all.

Xu Feng made his way through this last critical juncture, and immediately shot out his feet and ran like mad, he reached the edge of the steep cliff in an instant. At this moment, the moonlight was like silk, the mountain breeze whistled by, and the space between the cliffs was filled with a gauze-like fog, the scenery was surely beautiful and vast.

The Ji Le Palace was built on the side of a mountain, with the back of it facing sheer cliffs, there was only one way in or out, which was usually heavily guarded, and ordinarily hard to escape from. Xu Feng was also determined, two years ago there had been another old servant he was on good terms with who had come down with a serious illness, and he had learned from him that beneath this steep cliff, a man-made path had been cut out, leading directly to the bottom of the mountain. Although it was called a path, in reality, it was just some shallow notches cut into the side of the cliff, that just allowed people to gain a foothold.

If you were extremely skilled at qinggong, you could just tread on these notches to climb down, but as for Xu Feng, the fact was that he was surrounded by danger, and taking any slight misstep, would mean falling so that his body would be smashed to pieces with his bones ground into powder. But compared to going back and suffering through the rape and insults of the Palace Master, he was willing to take risks.

He removed his belt, and tied one end to a boulder at the edge of the cliff, he wrapped the other end around his left-hand several times, then he nimble-bodily descended down the steep cliff.

The wind was strong as he descended the cliff, blowing the belt back and forth, Xu Feng fumbled about for a while, before he found a place where the rock was sticking out, and set his foot down on it. It was a pity that the belt was only so long, as he continued, there was no way to rely on any external factors, so he could only rely on himself. His right hand was void of energy, so while his feet hung in midair, he could only use his left hand to steady himself, which went without saying, was among the hardships and peril. The cliff had barely any trace of human activity, several places were covered in moss, so when he stepped down it was both wet and slippery, every step he took stirred his soul.

Xu Feng clenched his teeth tightly, and carefully probed about, eventually climbing down bit-by-bit.

He was getting further and further away from the top of the cliff, yet it still seemed like a bottomless abyss without an end was beneath his feet, he was neither touching the sky nor the ground, and there was only the sound of the lower hem of his clothes fluttering in the wind. Before he knew it, the moon had gradually moved west, and from the horizon arose a glimmer of sunlight.

Xu Feng hadn’t slept for the whole night, and by this time he was already exhausted, he could only rely on the remaining vestiges of hatred in his heart, to just force himself to keep going despite the difficulties. On one hand, he thought about when he would become better at martial arts in the future, he would definitely come back to find the Palace Master and kill him in revenge, on the other hand, he was finding a place to gain a foothold, who would’ve known it would be slippery underfoot, and he unexpectedly stepped into empty space.

“Uhh…”

He had already come across several dangerous situations like this before, and had solved them all one by one, but this time his strength wasn’t as strong as it had been before, his left hand trembled slightly, and he couldn’t hold onto the rocks on the side of the cliff anymore.

Shit!

If… if his right hand wasn’t crippled…

He took great pains trying to move the palm of the hand that was hanging down by his side, but could only feel a burst of unbearable pain, at long last his left hand was unable to persevere as well, and it loosened just a bit.

Xu Feng raised his head, the last thing he did was take a look at the sky that was gradually getting brighter, then he slowly closed his eyes.

As he let go, his body plummeted straight down. It was as if only an instant had passed, yet it also felt like a long time had passed, he felt a strand of overwhelming power seemingly come from nowhere, and suddenly hitting him in the waist. His downward momentum was hindered by this strike, after which he continued to fall down, and in the end, it looked as if he had dropped into the water. His back hit solid rock, and it felt as if all of his shaken internal organs were about to break into pieces.

He’d heard that before a person died, their lives would flash before their eyes, and Xu Feng was naturally unable to break away from convention as well. As he was dazed, it was as if he had returned to that summer day from many years ago. At the time, when he was on the road fleeing from the calamity, all around him were victims of the famine, there were many days where he hadn’t found anything to eat, and one time, when he was starving so badly from not eating anything for a full two or three days, he cried himself awake in the middle of the night, holding his stomach as he cried out in hunger.

By that time, his mother and father had already passed away from sickness, but he still hadn’t known what death meant, so it was also too late to be sad for this reason. In actuality, his big brother was by his side, and had reached out his hands and pulled him into his arms.

After all these years had passed, Xu Feng could no longer clearly remember what his big brother had looked like, all he could remember was that his appearance was delicate and pretty, growing up remarkably like their mother. In that kind of hot weather, the young boy who was six years older than him held him in a tight embrace, and hummed a tune in a low voice beside his ear.

“The willow tree lives, whip a top… the willow tree is green…”[9]

Xu Feng listened and listened, and he couldn’t even feel the aching pain anymore, all he could feel was the warmth and calm of the embrace which seemed like it could block all the wind and rain[10] in the world.

Poison of the Human Panacea Chapter 56

Wu Yanfu pulled over the robe to cover up Bai Tan then spoke to Li Wuzhang, “What did you want to say? Speak.”

Bai Tan stared at him, he shook his head with a stern look in his eyes, Li Wuzhang’s heart felt like it was being cut by a knife, but he couldn’t get a single word out. He merely knocked his head on the ground as he said in a trembling voice, “Tan’er has already lost his martial arts, he can’t go around acting abused anymore now, so Shizun… please, just let go of him.”

With a wave of Wu Yanfu’s arm, a vigorous wind had Li Wuzhang flying out the door from the shock, “Whether this master lets him go or not, it is not for you to say. He was born as this master’s… even in death, he is this master’s ghost.”

“Shixiong!” Bai Tan sat up but was held in Wu Yanfu’s embrace tightly by one hand, the other threatened in a soft voice, “If you look at him one more time, then this master will not unseal his spell.”

“You!” Bai Tan was enraged, he made a harsh decision and with two fingers raised, he poked towards his own eyes abruptly. Wu Yanfu was instantly shocked, he grabbed tightly onto his wrist.

“What are you doing?”

“You won’t even allow me to look at someone else, I should simply dig out this pair of eyes and give it to you. After all, Li Wuzhang’s spell was activated because of me, I shall repay to settle it!” Bai Tan roared angrily, bright lights shot out of the pair of gorgeous, sharp phoenix eyes, the stare had Wu Yanfu’s heart throb jarringly. He pinched onto his chin, feeling that he should neither scare nor coax him, if he grasped too tightly, he would get rowdy, if he grasped too lightly, then he would vanish without a trace in the blink of an eye. He didn’t know what to do with the little wolf cub, he wasn’t able to control and watch him at all times like this, maybe with just one distraction, the other would hurt both others and himself.

Would there be a turn for the better if he took a step back?

“Alright, then watch carefully.”

Wu Yanfu picked him up into a horizontal hug, he walked to the front of Li Wuzhang’s then he exercised his fingers to pull up his head.

Bai Tan just thought he was going to take Li Wuzhang’s life. In the moment of desperation, he yelled out loudly as he used his neili to break open the acupoints and scratched at the other’s face.

Wu Yanfu quickly stepped back to dodge, then saw Bai Tan pulling Li Wuzhang over before leaping out of the window.

“Tan’er!”

Gui Yu’er witnessed what happened and jumped over to stop Wu Yanfu, yet Wu Yanfu only saw a dark figure passing by in front of his eyes. He struck it with a palm then was able to see the face of an old woman, he immediately stopped his attack, but the wind caused by his palm still swept her into the air then crashing onto the ground.

He naturally had no desire to care for her, he glanced once then was about to chase after, but he heard a soft, desolated scream, “Wait!”

“Have…you known Tan’er since a long time ago?”

“Correct.” Wu Yanfu’s steps stilled, he turned his head to look, “You have something to say to me?”

“Back then, did you ever betray him?”

Wu Yanfu was startled, watching the back of Bai Tan on a horse, running far away, his heart become dreadfully anxious, “Just what are you trying to say?”

“If you sincerely like him, then be sure to treat him better in the future.”

“That is natural.” Wu Yanfu put away Shiyue, he didn’t want to stay for another second, he leaped onto the horse’s back. There was a great amount of sand blown into the air now, Bai Tan’s figure was already gone in a blink of an eye. For a moment, he didn’t know where to start chasing, the sand in the air was as rough as the sea waves, causing the horse to neigh more and more and couldn’t find the direction. Inside, he just felt for certain that like leaving martial skills behind for Bai Tan was a complete mistake.

Bai Tan rushed forward like a headless fly the whole way, he saw what seemed to be the outline of a desert oasis from far away, he instantly grabbed on tightly to the rein to have the horse sprint towards it. They sprinted into a field of grass, there were a lot of trees all around, even the sand had lessened quite a bit.

Bai Tan wiped the sand from his face, his mind hadn’t calmed down yet. Seeing a little stream in front, he quickly went over, squatted down, and washed his face. Then he pulled Li Wuzhang off the horse’s back, but suddenly heard the sound of people talking from nearby. He looked towards the direction of the sound, only to see about a dozen flickering figures highlighted by the glow of firelight. It was Lian Jiu and his people, within them, there was an individual in mismatched attire, that was Si You without a doubt.

He had a severed arm, yet he acted like nothing had happened as he held up wine in the other hand, chattering with those Yue Yin Palace people joyfully. Where could that weak appearance of his from earlier even be seen?

Once seeing that person, Bai Tan was naturally gnashing his teeth from anger, he wished he could skin him alive, but he had to take care of Li Wuzhang right now, so he didn’t dare to make any hasty move. He collected herbs from the area around with light movements, he chewed them up then applied them onto the injury on Li Wuzhang’s hand. After he finished bandaging it up, he saw how the other still had a pale face and remained unconscious, he couldn’t help the ominous feeling growing in him.

He carried Li Wuzhang on his back, but just as he was about to leave the riverside, he could hear his name being mentioned distinctively within the conversation, his ears involuntarily picked up on it.

“I’ve caused that little evildoer to be free for anyone to punish, now that his life is in Tian Su’s grasp, you don’t have to worry about him bringing any threats to Yue Yin Palace.”

“As expected, Brother Si is sharper, gaining victory with unstained swords, forcing that little evildoer to where he has no path left to walk on.”

“So… the item you promised me…”

Bai Tan looked intently and saw Si You reach out a hand towards Lian Jiu.

Lian Jiu hesitated for a while then took an object the size of a silkworm out from his sleeve, the object was wriggling slightly. Bai Tan’s heart leaped, he knew that must’ve been some kind of gu insect.

“This Heart-Deluding Gu[1] is extremely powerful, it shall not be used easily… who are you going to use it against?”

Xiao’s Comments: Wow, what an abrupt end to the chapter…so short too.

[1] Heart-Deluding Gu (痴心销魂蛊) – I did quite a change to the name since the literal sounded really awkward (and joke-like) in English. But the literal would be something like:

“Silly heart (= to be blindly in love) /

melting soul (= to be enchanted) /

gu insect (= an insect that can control people)”

Poison of the Human Panacea (Chapter 55)

Poison of the Human Panacea: Chapter 55

“To agree this simply, you don’t even seem like a wolf cub now.” Wu Yanfu smiled like he’d just released a sigh of relief, his body swayed and his hand pinned against the wall.

That was when Bai Tan felt wetness in front of his chest, he fixed his eyes on it.

Through the opening of the man’s clothing, those obvious, extremely deep wounds on his chest were exposed, even a few of the ghost vines had broken, it seemed as if they were made by a wild beast. Plus, sand was all over the wounds, even his flesh was all over the place, causing it not to be able to heal as quickly as it had in the past. Visually, it was very frightful.

Bai Tan’s heart clenched, “You are…”

“Got clawed by the Gu Ren on the ring.” Wu Yanfu observed his expression, “You’re caring for this master?”

Bai Tan furrowed his brows, “It’s just a pity about the medicinal blood.”

“You’re caring for this master.” Once finished, Wu Yanfu held him up to walk up the stairs, Bai Tan didn’t struggle, he nervously pointed to the empty room on the left, “Go to that room.”

Wu Yanfu got the door open in one kick, he walked to the bedside and couldn’t stop as he fell onto it, pressing the person in his embrace onto the bed as well. Bai Tan pushed himself up then jumped off the bed, he struggled to flip the other over. Wu Yanfu lay on the bed with no movement at all, his head tilt to the side as his half-opened eyes looked at him, seeming very weak.

Bai Tan had already been prepared to fight to the death with him, never had he expected this kind of situation. Suddenly, he didn’t know what to do. He looked around to see a pot of wine, so he retrieved it, then also got the oil lamp. He ripped off a clean piece of cloth from his inner clothes before squatting down to help Wu Yanfu treat the claw wounds on Wu Yanfu’s chest.

He used the wine to soak the cloth so he could get the sand out of his wounds, bit by bit. This should’ve been extremely painful, but Wu Yanfu just felt like his chest was being scratched by a little kitten’s claws over and over, even causing his heart to feel numb from the scratching.

Though it was merely a wound treatment, it was a hundred times more pleasurable to him than to be admired by thousands.

Wu Yanfu’s gaze fixed on the youth’s face without looking away at all, the candlelight had made his fierce brows and eyes appear gentle as well. His eyelashes that shuddered slightly were like a moth flying into fire, intruding into the forbidden zone of his.

Noticing his stare, Bai Tan held his head super low, but his slightly rushed breathing had exposed him.

“It’s done, lay for a while first.”

He turned around, but was grabbed by Wu Yanfu’s hand and pulled back unexpectedly, slumped on the bed, surrounded by the man’s half-naked body. A head of silver locks bent down, covering the candlelight, mottled and ambiguous, but the flickering sentiment in those blue eyes was crystal clear.

“Tan’er.”

Bai Tan panicked internally from the given look, he avoided his eyes with a cold face, then a large hand caressed his cheek, heat seeped through the ice-cold palm as two fingers pinched his earlobe, stroking without stop.

Bai Tan turned his head to dodge, he clawed towards his chest, “Don’t pinch my ear!”

“This master is still going to.” Wu Yanfu couldn’t help but laugh, he just wanted to lower his head and give it a bite. However, it was really inconvenient with the mask on his face, he grabbed his wrist, “Little wolf cub, still this ferocious even without your martial skills, where did you get the guts from? If not for the fact that master adores you, how could master allow you to be this impudent?”

Bai Tan was annoyed and wanted to retort, but remembering Li Wuzhang’s situation, he relaxed his tone, “When did you adore me? You obviously… just want to have a pet.”

This sentence that fell in Wu Yanfu’s ears merely seemed coquettish, he couldn’t help cover the other’s eyes with a hand, remove his mask and kiss him, starting from light to deep. Bai Tan couldn’t handle it, his mind was immediately in a mess, he panted continuously while the root of his ears flushed red.

Since he’d gotten a taste of love making, even his body heated up, emitting sweetly-fragrant sweat.

Afraid that he might get excited from smelling it, Bai Tan immediately started to flounder.

Wu Yanfu was already riled up, he took in a breath, and when his lips and tongue withdrew, a wisp of silver thread appeared on the tip of his tongue.

“Who would allow their pet to annihilate them, and even tolerate him to scratch and claw at them, mn?”

Bai Tan’s chest trembled, even though he clearly knew enough of how cold-blooded this person was, to be treated so gently by him now, an ember still lit up within the dead ashes in the bottom of his heart. The most powerful weapons in this world aren’t blades without eyes, but tender affection and sweet words, it is both a soft punishment, and poison as well, it could end one’s life easily.

Sadly, he didn’t have the life to enjoy the most fatal poison of the world.

“Shizun, if you sincerely adore Tan’er, then can you agree to something for Tan’er?”

Wu Yanfu listened to him acting spoiled with him, he couldn’t stop the waves inside of his heart, he put the mask on again, “What is it?”

Bai Tan gulped, “The spell on Li Wuzhang, it was cast by you, right?”

Wu Yanfu’s eyes darkened, he already knew what he wanted to say, “That’s right. He betrayed this master, so naturally this master would punish him.”

“Can you… forgive him?”

Wu Yanfu squinted his eyes, he was completely silent for a long while, holding tightly onto his waist, he spoke one word at a time, “Since Tan’er has spoken, this master will forgive him this once; but, though the death punishment can be exempted, he can’t run from other punishments. This master is going to kick him out of the sect, leaving him to survive on his own, you and him shall not interact ever again in the future.”

“Do you really mean it?” Bai Tan hadn’t thought he would agree, he couldn’t believe it.

“That will be decided by you.” Wu Yanfu smiled, “This master and you still have forty-eight positions that haven’t been trained left.”

Bai Tan’s face flushed, he quickly questioned, “Then…can Shizun undo the spell on him?”

Wu Yanfu face expressed displeasure, “Tan’er is focused on thinking of another person, what place does that leave master?”

Bai Tan was speechless for a moment, that sentence was full of the smell of jealousy, he didn’t seem like a master, he sounded just like a grumbling, imperial concubine of the Cold Palace[1].

“Then…tomorrow morning.”

“Alright, what you said, tomorrow morning.” Wu Yanfu reached out a hand to flick the candle flame out, he let down the bed curtain then sighed deeply, “The spring night is too bitterly short, time within the curtains should be cherished well.”

Once Bai Tan heard those words, the hairs all over his body stood up, he immediately wanted to escape off the bed, but was blocked by Wu Yanfu at the bed’s end; so he tried crawling out under his arm, it was like Wu Yanfu had caught a little fox. After he’d finally caught the person back into his embrace, Bai Tan shrank in fear with one kiss, then with another kiss, he shrank in even more, his whole body was rolled up into a ball again.

Wu Yanfu looked at how he used his arms to block his face securely with a curved back as his knees balled up to cover his abdomen, it was both funny and angering. With one hand, he held onto the pair of delicate jade-like feet that he couldn’t hide, grasping them in his palm.

“Was last night’s activity that scary? This master thought it had… an endless aftertaste.”

Bai Tan shook his head, biting onto his lip to not make any sounds…… Wu Yanfu was definitely still wanting to take away his martial powers.

If it didn’t succeed the first time, then there would be a next time, he still had forty-eight opportunities left.

As long as he was still alive for a day, he couldn’t afford to lose his martial power, just as a pangolin can’t lose their shell.

But how could Wu Yanfu allow him to keep those sharp claws.

Wu Yanfu didn’t cross the line. “Whatever, since you’re so scared, it’ll be fine for this master to teach you in later days as well.” He lay down while hugging him, then pulled up the blanket to wrap both of them under it, his arms held him from behind, locking him tightly into his embrace. Such a position was very intimate, Bai Tan instantly felt a wave of movement from his alluring bone. He quickly turned around and his face happened to press against Wu Yanfu’s, sticking right up against the cold and chilly jade mirror mask.

A dull light drifted in the dark, seeming rather gloomy.

“Why are you always wearing this mask, and even have bandages underneath?”

“Do you still remember this master’s past appearance?”

Bai Tan’s head shook like a pallet drum.

This little kid! Wu Yanfu grazed the tip of his nose, he threatened in a low voice, “If you don’t remember, then master also has a method to make you remember, except, you might not really like that method.”

Bai Tan shivered in fear, he nodded.

“If you remember, then illustrate this master’s appearance, this master naturally has a use for it.”

Bai Tan quickly realized it……

In the Jiang Hu community, Wu Yanfu’s identity would be much more useful than Tian Su’s identity.

But…

Bai Tan remembered something, he blurted out a question, “Why should I illustrate it? That Si You already knew your identity, right? He’s so loyally infatuated with you, shouldn’t he remember your appearance even better?”

Wu Yanfu paused and then hugged him tighter, “This master said, you will illustrate.”

Bai Tan was stunned for a while with wide eyes, understanding the meaning behind those words, his breathing stopped for an instant.

“If you let me kill him, then I will illustrate for you.”

“Tan’er, you’ve already cut off his arm, wasn’t that bad enough? Si You used to be…”

Bai Tan broke out of his arms roughly, he jumped off the bed, “I know he was once your Concubine Ming, he followed you and was by your side for over ten years, you merely searched for me because you didn’t want him to die.”

“Tan’er, who did you hear such things from?”

“Naturally it was from Si You. You believe in him, and not me, logically, you should believe in his portrait illustration more, right?”

“Then tell this master, did Si You kill someone with Shiyue then cut his own arm off?”

Bai Tan’s chest clogged up in anger, “That’s right, he certainly cut off his own arm. He schemed against me, he had it all planned out since the beginning, luring me to accidentally kill that Kong Xing Sect’s monk, then purposely crashed into my blade!”

“Nonsense!” Wu Yanfu sat up from the bed, he raised his eyes and fixed them on him, “As the Fu Tu Sect’s Hu Fa for two generations, also a well-known figure of Jiang Hu, in order to scheme against you, he was willing to cripple himself? While there’s you, in order to train martial arts in the beginning, you seduced this master’s close friend, Mi Lansheng, did you think this master had forgotten?”

Bai Tan had no words to respond with, he clenched his fists tight, the little ember at the bottom of his heart extinguished completely.

In the end, he wouldn’t believe him, whatever, there was never any trust to be had between the two of them.

“Right, in order to train, I didn’t care what method I used. I saw Mi Lansheng had pretty good martial skills, so I wanted to use him for testing, ha, he kept saying he’d avenge you, but what happened in the end? His was entranced by my seduction, head dizzy, he even stole a piece of veil I wore……”

“Silence!” Scenes of his enchanting look as he acted out that day in front of Mi Lansheng flashed by Wu Yanfu’s eyes, his heart burst in anger. He dragged the other over and firmly pushed him onto the bed.

“Right, if this master wasn’t here, you probably would’ve already been pleasured underneath someone else.”

Each word of this sentence was a spike in his ears, Bai Tan suddenly felt a sharp pain in his alluring bone, instantly, his whole body shivered. He wanted to have his points released and escape right there, but was mindful that Li Wuzhang was still under Wu Yanfu’s control, so he forcefully endured it.

“As my shizun, when you violated me by taking advantage of me being in a vulnerable state, you sure didn’t feel ashamed!”

“Ashamed? Today, this master will act shamefully to the end then!”

“Don’t you know how to enchant people? Why is it that you become like this with this master?”

Wu Yanfu grabbed onto his belt before pulling it down in an instant, then he grabbed the youth’s lapels to pull them apart harshly.

“Mhn…… Shizun, no! No!” Bai Tan started yelling panickedly, immediately showing his weak side as he struggled with all his mind, yet still, all his clothes were peeled off, falling to the floor in the next moment. He held onto both of his legs, curling up to a ball entirely to protect his body, helpless like a child facing a beast.

Wu Yanfu’s movement staggered seeing him like that, suddenly, a loud knock came from the door.

A figure walked in through the door, but after just a few steps, he kneeled onto the ground with a loud thud.

“Shizun…please let Tan’er go. He’s already…”

“Shut up!” Bai Tan yelled fiercely, he didn’t want to let Wu Yanfu know that he didn’t have long left to live.

He doesn’t want him to find some way to save him, he only wished to… never meet him again in the next life.

Xiao’s Comments: Ugh, why would you not want him to save you? I know you’re disappointed but what Wu Yanfu said about your actions weren’t false…

As an Elder Brother: Chapter 2

As an Elder Brother: Chapter 2

The inside of Xu Feng’s mind went blank, he still hadn’t realized what the phrase meant before he saw the sword’s blade flash before him, and felt a strange, severe pain radiate from his right wrist.

The Palace Master kept smiling, using the same unrivaled facial expression as before.

Xu Feng watched as pearls of blood trickled down the tip of the sword, at last, he realized the meridian[1] in his right hand had been broken off, which meant… he wouldn’t be able to use a sword anymore.

Just then, the subordinates the Palace Master had sent out had also returned, two of them had sustained injuries. They bowed and reported back, “Palace Master, we subordinates are incompetent, and were unable to locate Young Master Mu Rong.”

The Palace Master glanced at the injuries they’d sustained on their bodies, and asked, “Did you guys encounter people from the Mu Rong family?”

“Yes.”

“How many people have been lost?”

“Three people.”

The Palace Master scowled.

Liu Yue said, “Palace Master, allow this subordinate to go meet with them.”

“No need, the people of the Mu Rong family are very powerful and great in size, they have probably already found Mu Rong Fei, so there is no need for us to take unnecessary risks.”

“But…”

The Palace Master said blandly, “It can’t be helped. Let’s go.”

“The Palace Master took such pains to plan this all out, and it wasn’t easy to attract Mu Rong Fei to come to us. If we leave right now, will all our previous efforts not have been in vain? There will never be such an opportunity again…”

The Palace Master didn’t say anything, but his dark gaze slightly deepened, and his lips slowly widened into a smile.

Liu Yue already understood the Palace Master’s temper, and she knew that he always hid his feelings of joy or anger from being exposed upon his face. And so, although he had a wide smile on his face just then; he had, in fact, already flown off the handle in anger, and she didn’t dare speak immediately. The Palace Master hadn’t given instructions on how to deal with Xu Feng, but how could any of them venture to let him go? Liu Yue thought for a moment, then snatched Xu Feng up onto the horse’s back, taking him along with them as they left.

Xu Feng had lost quite a bit of blood, and the wounds on his body had already become numb. He was dizzy the entire ride and was unaware of how much time had passed. Everyone stopped once they were in front of a yuanzi[2] consisting of three sections. At first glance, the yuanzi looked average, but the inside consisted of what appeared to be a wealthy and high-ranking household. After the Palace Master dismounted the horse, he went straight to the main room.

Liu Yue followed behind and asked, “Palace Master, how do you plan on dealing with that boy who was driving the carriage?”

“Just throw him outside the doors.”

“Is that all? That boy was the one who ruined the Palace Master’s big plans.”

The Palace Master didn’t even look back, and spoke indifferently, “Did he not sustain a few injuries? Wait until he has fully bled out, then naturally he will die.”

At this, Liu Yue understood what he meant. He intended to let Xu Feng die a slow and painful death. She thought to herself, “The Palace Master is indeed as ruthless as expected,” but she didn’t dare ask for mercy on Xu Feng’s behalf. She only felt slightly sorry for him as she glanced at Xu Feng, then tossed him outside the Palace Master’s living quarters, inside of the yuanzi.

The sky gradually darkened. Since Xu Feng had suffered for so long, he had long since lost all the energy in his body, making it impossible to get up off the ground. But also, after a while, he was unable to die, he only felt his body becoming debilitated; bit by bit, the sort of taste of waiting for your death, it was truly way harder to bear than being pierced through the heart with a sword.

He thought about how he’d been raised by his Master since young, how he hadn’t been able to repay him for his great kindness yet, how he had been separated from his elder brother since childhood, how he still hadn’t managed to find the whereabouts of that member of his family, and the unavoidable feeling of fear bubbled up from within his heart. But then, he thought of the brave heroes he had read about in huaben stories, every one of them was awe-inspiringly righteous, they all saw death as casual of an event as returning home. Even though he’d been crippled from using martial arts, he couldn’t just die a coward. Immediately, he felt a burst of heroic spirit, he didn’t know where that energy came from, but he started to scream at the tightly shut door.

At first, he couldn’t let himself go, so over and over again, he cursed at how dirty and shameless the Palace Master was, saying that the Ji Le Palace did all sorts of evil deeds. It could be said that practice makes perfect, even when it came to cursing out people. As he kept cursing, it gradually flowed out more smoothly by the end. Using what he’d learned from the books he’d always read, and from what he’d heard his sect brothers say, he thoroughly and completely threw out any, and all curses and abuses.

After he had finished swearing, even he didn’t know exactly what he ended up saying and only thought that even if he didn’t survive, as long as he could curse at them like this, it wouldn’t be considered a loss in his book.

At that moment, he heard a ‘creak’ as the room’s door suddenly opened.

The Palace Master had already taken a bath and had changed into some dark-colored clothing. His black hair was still dripping wet, draped casually over his shoulder. He walked in the moonlight and stopped in front of Xu Feng’s body, using the tip of his shoe to lift Xu Feng’s chin, he asked, “Who did you say resembled a woman, and liked to be pinned down by others the most?”

Xu Feng was dizzy and confused, and he couldn’t remember if he had expressed such a curse, but he didn’t dare show any weakness and responded at once, “You put in so much effort to capture Young Master Mu Rong, was it not for this purpose? How shameless!”

The Palace Master glanced at him, then smiled instead of getting angry, and said, “You are quite brave. To let you die like this would cheapen you.”

As he spoke, he reached out and hit several of Xu Feng’s acupoints[3], and temporarily stopped his bleeding, then dragged him into the room by his feet.

Xu Feng suspected that this person had thought of another way to torture him, but since he didn’t know what he intended to do, the fear within his heart grew. To his surprise, after the Palace Master dragged him into the room, he flung him onto the bed.

Xu Feng knew that he wouldn’t just let him rest nicely like this, and when his back made contact with the soft bed, he felt a chill run through him, so much that even his teeth chattered. He asked, “What… What are you doing?”

The Palace Master smiled at him, and asked in return, “Say, on this bed, what else would I, a perverted bastard do?”

As he spoke, he reached out and started to undo Xu Feng’s clothing.

Xu Feng suddenly jumped up, wanting to struggle as if his very life depended on it.

But his martial arts had been crippled, and he had suffered great injuries, how could he stand a chance with the Palace Master as his opponent? Soon, all four of his limbs were pinned down. The other person’s fiery hot, vigorous body overlapped his. The Palace Master softly licked the rim of his ear, which made him both scared and nauseous.

“Since you’ve let Mu Rong Fei run away, I will reluctantly have you replace him.”

Once the words sunk in, Xu Feng felt a breeze on his bottom half as his legs were roughly forced apart. Soon after, he felt a hot, stiff object press against his body, and it ruthlessly tore his body apart.

“Ah… Ahh. Ah….”

Xu Feng couldn’t contain it and screamed out miserably. His bottom half felt as if someone took a knife and was slicing him apart, bit by bit, his whole body seemed to be in hell. It was at that moment, he finally understood why Mu Rong Fei would’ve rather died than been willing to fall into the hands of the Ji Le Palace.

“Ah…”

Xu Feng screamed and finally woke up from his nightmare. Even though it was early in the Autumn season, he was soaked with sweat, and the old injury on his wrist had begun to ache dully.

Jin Shu heard the ruckus, and pushed the door open to enter, then said, “Young Master, what’s wrong? Did you have a nightmare again?”

Xu Feng waved his hand, and said, “It’s nothing.”

“Would you like to get up, Young Master? It’s very lively outside today.”

“What’s happening?”

Jin Shu smiled mischievously, and said, “The Palace Master has sent several people over, all waiting to attend to the Young Master.”

Xu Feng stared at him blankly but didn’t get to question him thoroughly. He could hear bits of what sounded like footsteps, and several green-clothed girls holding a water basin, towels, and other things, walked into the room single file. They were led by a woman with a benevolent gleam in her eye. Her name was Su Xin, who was, in fact, He Tingzhou’s head maid, and usually, she was the most useful. She was the one who arranged almost everything necessary for everyday life, and he would’ve never thought she would have been sent here.

Xu Feng was a bit confused, and couldn’t figure out what He Tingzhou’s intentions were.

The group of girls faced him and greeted him in sync, then they all surrounded him, one-by-one so that they could serve him to wash his face and rinse his mouth.

Xu Feng only ever had Jin Shu as his servant and had never seen such a show of extravagance. He continued, “I can do it by myself. I would not dare to make several young ladies work on my behalf.”

Su Xin pursed her lips and smiled, “We sisters will be serving in the Cui Zhu Pavilion from this day onward. Young Master need not be so courteous.”

As she spoke, she wrung a towel with warm water and handed it to Xu Feng.

Xu Feng could only accept it, however, he felt a jolt of pain on his palm, and didn’t know if something had pricked him. When he looked down to check, he saw that the palm of his hand was bleeding. Su Xin swore and quickly took back the towel. She said that she was unable to perform satisfactorily, and pleaded for the young master to punish her.

Xu Feng was originally a martial arts practitioner, so this kind of small injury wasn’t worth paying attention to, especially not enough for him to make things difficult for a woman. With a few words, the matter was resolved.

Su Xin heaved a sigh of relief, and quietly hid the towel. She then told someone to retrieve the medicine to give to Xu Feng to apply to his wound.

After such hectic events, he finally finished washing his face and rinsing his mouth. Once Xu Feng had dressed neatly, he left to go check out the central room and saw that breakfast was already prepared. It was much more extravagant than what he usually ate. Although the events over the past two days were all kinds of weird, he’d managed to keep his calm in the face of the unexpected, and thought to himself it could be taken as if the sky was falling. As long as he could die with a full stomach, it would be okay, so he sat down to eat without worry.

Even though it was just breakfast, the porridge was cooked so that it was both fragrant and thick, there were also several types of sweet and salty side dishes, all were dishes Xu Feng enjoyed eating, the chopsticks in his hand never stopped moving, and he kept eating until he was full. After he finished eating, he heard Su Xin chuckle, and say, “As expected, what the Palace Master said was right.”

Xu Feng was puzzled and looked over at her.

Su Xin explained, “The Palace Master had to go practice his martial arts this morning and is not able to dine with Young Master, so he told us to bring what he usually loved to eat and make them the same way to send to Young Master. It looks like the Palace Master’s expectations were right, sure enough, the Young Master likes them too.”

Xu Feng learned he had the same tastes as that person, and couldn’t help but feel awkward for a brief moment. Usually, after he finished eating breakfast, he would always practice a round of fists inside of the yuanzi, this time there was a group of young girls on the side smiling and watching him, nevertheless, he couldn’t fully demonstrate his skill, so he had no choice but to bring out a book to read. Su Xin and the others all found something to keep busy with and didn’t try to bother him. Only Jin Shu continuously had his brows raised in delight, and said loudly, “Once the bitterness ends, the sweetness begins[4], at last, Young Master is being favored.”

Xu Feng didn’t believe he earned any favor at all, according to He Tingzhou’s temperament, he was afraid there was going to be some sort of conspiracy trap lying in wait for him.

The early morning passed quickly. When it was almost noon, He Tingzhou came again. Arriving with him was a middle-aged scholar in his forties, a person from the Ji Le Palace, so of course, his appearance was excellent, especially the three locks of long beard underneath his chin that had a hint of the demeanor of a transcendent being.

Xu Feng didn’t recognize this person at all and only heard He Tingzhou call this person Martial Uncle[5]. To be addressed like this by He Tingzhou, it could only be the elder named Song Wen, whom he heard was one of the best when it came to the art of healing, but he practiced closed-door training[6] all year round and people usually didn’t get to see him, so he had no idea why he would also come to the Cui Zhu Pavilion.

He Tingzhou commanded the people who didn’t have fixed duties to leave, and still using the strange expression he’d had yesterday to glance at Xu Feng, he asked Song Wen, “Martial Uncle, about that matter… there is no doubt about it?”

Song Wen said with a stiff face, “Since Palace Master does not believe, what is the purpose of finding me to confirm it?”

He Tingzhou didn’t speak any longer and tightened his right hand, which was balled in a fist.

Because of that, Xu Feng just realized that his hand was wrapped with a white cloth as if injured.

He Tingzhou remained quiet for a bit before he said, “I beg of Martial Uncle to help check his pulse.”

Xu Feng asked strangely, “Check what pulse?”

He Tingzhou smiled at Xu Feng, and said, “Nothing more than an examination, it’s a harmless matter.”

Xu Feng felt like he was a piece of meat on a chopping board, not to mention his meridians, even his life was squeezed between the hands of others, so without better alternatives, he could only sit down beside the table, and extend his right hand for Song Wen to measure his pulse.

Song Wen narrowed his eyes and examined him for a short time. He twirled the long beard below his chin with his fingers, and said, “The qi and blood are insufficient, and the energy channels are blocked, I believe it may be due to taking medicine that suppresses internal energy[7].”

He Tingzhou said, “I’m already mixing the antidote, after a couple of days, the poison within his body can be released, allowing him to recover his internal energy.”

Song Wen nodded his head, “Young people’s bodies have great foundations, and there are no other critical conditions, so the most important thing is the injury on his right hand…”

Xu Feng’s heart tightened. He didn’t notice that He Tingzhou’s face had also changed slightly and waited for Song Wen to continue.

He saw Song Wen sigh, then say, “The meridians on his right hand have already been destroyed, since the injury is also many years old, even if Hua Tuo[8] was to come alive, he too would have a hard time providing treatment.”

At that time, He Tingzhou had been so ruthless and accurate with his sword, all for the purpose of crippling his martial arts to begin with, such was the conclusion Xu Feng had already come to, and didn’t feel disappointed in the least, on the contrary, He Tingzhou pressed his hand into the table, and asked, “Even Martial Uncle has no solution?”

“If he’s able to recover well, he’ll still be able to hold chopsticks, but if he wanted to use a sword… the fact is that he would no longer be able to.”

He Tingzhou was expressionless for a long time, and slowly turned his head to face Xu Feng.

Xu Feng met his gaze and felt a shiver shoot through his heart, it wasn’t clear what kind of expression he had. It was as if… as if he had been stabbed through the chest by someone else, which was painful enough to lose self-control.

But how could that be?

Xu Feng was the one who couldn’t use a sword anymore, it definitely wasn’t He Tingzhou.

Xu Feng was distracted for a moment, and as soon as he refocused, the person in front of him had already recovered his usual smiling, calm demeanor. Xu Feng dimly laughed at himself for being blind, as he patiently endured listening to Song Wen prattle away for several more sentences, then he had Jin Shu receive the prescription, although his right hand couldn’t hold a sword anymore, it would still be okay if he could use chopsticks.

Song Wen took his leave once he finished examining his meridians, He Tingzhou accompanied him to the gate entrance, and asked in a low voice, “Could Martial Uncle think of some other solution?”

Helplessly, Song Wen said, “I shall go back and search through the medical books, but this matter is most likely difficult to resolve, Palace Master should not wrack his nerves over it too much.”

He Tingzhou didn’t make a sound after he saw Song Wen out, becoming spellbound by the hibiscus flowers in the courtyard.

Su Xin approached him, and asked, “It is almost noon, will Palace Master be dining here?”

He Tingzhou looked at Xu Feng, and saw he was currently holding a book and reading it, without even a sideways glance towards him, he smiled bitterly and said, “I have matters to attend to elsewhere, you guys should accompany the Young Master to his meal.”

He paused for a moment, then said, “Excellent work today regarding this matter, there will naturally be a reward for you someday in the future.”

Of course, Su Xin knew what matter he was speaking about, so she quickly thanked him, and saw He Tingzhou out of the Cui Zhu Pavilion.

Xu Feng heard that he didn’t need to eat with He Tingzhou, and heaved a sigh of relief, he thought to himself that without having to face this person, he could even eat two more bowls of food.

He Tingzhou had just left when a ‘pa’ sound came from within the room, the table that they had just been using earlier to measure his pulse unexpectedly split from the center, and after touching it lightly, it turned into a pile of wood.

Jin Shu said strangely, “It was perfectly fine, how could the table have broken?”

Su Xin said, “I’m afraid maybe because it was used for so long, the inside had already been eaten clean by insects, I’ll send someone out in a little bit to exchange it for another table.”

Xu Feng had studied martial arts, and with one look he could see that the table was broken by someone who’d hit it with their internal energy. If that strike hit an ordinary person, he feared that even their core would’ve shattered. He Tingzhou revealed this card to him on purpose, but for what purpose in the end?

Xu Feng remained perplexed despite much thought, so he simply stopped thinking about it. After he’d eaten lunch, he enjoyed the cool air underneath the grape trellis as he’d done before, and was quite content within himself.

After two short days, his position within the Ji Le Palace could be viewed as if heaven and earth had switched places. Previously, the Palace Master wouldn’t favor him with a visit for two or three months at a time, giving the gates to the Cui Zhu Pavilion the cold shoulder, and they had to deal with having barely enough expenses to cover their food and clothing. Now, he even had his most trusted personal servant girl entrusted to him, and other things were being sent to his room like running water, as for news that Xu Feng had become the favorite, it hadn’t even taken half a day before this matter had been spread around.

Some people were jealous, and there were those that were envious, but there were also people who were happy… such as Jin Shu, who had been walking around like he was on cloud nine these past few days.

Xu Feng knew that this matter must have some inside story behind it, thus he prepared more than 100% of his mental power, and waited for He Tingzhou to make his move. After a few more days like that passed, sure enough, He Tingzhou came around to give him the medicine he had prepared to restore his internal energy. After Xu Feng ingested the medicine, he felt the inside of his dantian[9] vacillate with threads of heat, along with power circulating throughout all of his limbs and bones, it was uncomfortably warm.

When He Tingzhou would ask, Xu Feng purposefully hid the truth from him and only said that his internal energy was recovering extremely slowly, all so that he could make preparations for escaping from the Ji Le Palace in the future. He Tingzhou didn’t suspect him in the least and would visit the Cui Zhu Pavilion pretty much every day, there were times he would join him for a meal, and there were times he would briefly speak with him, but there were also times he would stand to the side and watch him tend to the flowers and plants. There was one exceptional matter, and that was the fact that He Tingzhou never stayed overnight at the Cui Zhu Pavilion, every time it was about that time, he would rush out.

Xu Feng couldn’t have asked for anything better, and naturally, let him leave freely.

This day He Tingzhou had had some free time, and idled away in Xu Feng’s room for a whole evening after he’d eaten dinner, he leisurely relaxed on the couch, and fetched the book Xu Feng was always reading to read for himself. Recently, he had been coming every day, so much so that he pretty much read through all of Xu Feng’s collection of books that he had compiled with much difficulty.

Xu Feng noticed this, and couldn’t help but say, “If the Palace Master likes them, then these books can be taken back to be read slowly, so there would be no need to come to my place every day.”

He Tingzhou raised his head and gave him a quick look, then continued looking down, and asked indifferently, “Do you think I come here every day just to read books?”

Xu Feng was stumped for words and momentarily couldn’t respond.

Cast in the pale yellow candlelight, He Tingzhou’s exceedingly beautiful face seemed to resemble a painting, his eyelashes seemed especially thick and dark and fluttered softly like the wings of a butterfly. He spoke in a low voice, “Whether I am here to read books or see people, you seriously do not know?”

Xu Feng listened to him ask in this way, and immediately became so scared that he didn’t dare speak.

He Tingzhou didn’t want to press much further either, so he swallowed the words that were on the tip of his tongue, and changed the subject, “How much of your internal energy have you been able to recover?”

Xu Feng had already recovered more than half, yet he replied, “Maybe around twenty or thirty percent.”

“Matters like these must be taken step by step, there is no need to be anxious about it.”

“…Mn.”

The two chatted for a bit until there was nothing left to be said. Xu Feng thought about what He Tingzhou had just said and felt an indescribable nervousness from within. He Tingzhou was also absent-minded, and he had stared at one page in the book for a long time, and yet still did not flip to the next.

Coincidentally, at that moment, there was a popping sound, and the wick of the lantern suddenly exploded, then petered out.

The room was plunged into darkness.

Xu Feng stood up to leave and said, “I shall get Jin Shu to come and change the lantern.”

In the darkness, it was hard to distinguish things, and after he’d taken a step, his wrist was grabbed by another hand, He Tingzhou spoke into his ear, “Wait a moment.”

Xu Feng stopped walking, he could feel those slender fingers grope along his wrist for some time, at last, they ended up pressing on the old scar from the past, and the fingertips gently caressed it, then what came after was He Tingzhou’s sighing-like voice asking, “Do you hate me in your heart?”

Xu Feng broke out into a cold sweat.

This question was asked quite awkwardly, how should he respond?

If he was still the young boy who first set out into Jiang Hu three years ago, he would’ve definitely jumped up and berated He Tingzhou to no end. How could hate be the only thing? He would’ve been overjoyed to eat the flesh of his enemy and sleep on his skin[10]. But he’d already endured three years of torture, and already lost the spirit he had at that time, he knew what he should say, and what he shouldn’t. He still wanted to escape the Ji Le Palace, so he couldn’t die here, no matter what.

At that moment in time, Jin Shu’s footsteps could be heard coming from outside the door, and a faint sliver of light passed through the door to the inside.

Xu Feng carefully hid what he was feeling, so he let his gaze drift down, and said, “Why would the Palace Master need to ask such a thing? In any event, I’m already a part of the Ji Le Palace, for my entire life, I will always be by the Palace Master’s side.”

Those words were not sincere at all.

He Tingzhou didn’t try to expose him at all, and merely revealed a faint smile, within his expression there was an unexpected hint of sadness.

As an Elder Brother: Chapter 1

Xu Feng reclined in the bamboo chair after he’d finished eating his lunch, and casually flipped through a huaben[1] anthology. The heat of the autumn sun had yet to dissipate, and the sun was still quite vicious, but it was still considered shady and cool beneath the grape trellis. He used his left hand to flip through the pages of the book, while his right hand dangled beside his body, revealing a centipede-like scar upon his wrist.

But as he got to an interesting part, he saw Jin Shu, the person who ordinarily served him every day, hurriedly sprinting inside towards him and yelling out, “Young Master, Young Master, the Palace Master[2] has come to our Cui Zhu[3] Pavilion[4]!”

Xu Feng didn’t even lift his head and continued to slowly flip through the pages of his book as before. He smiled, “Do not try to trick me with your words. The day isn’t even dark yet, why would the Palace Master be here already?”

Jin Shu was sweating profusely, “The Palace Master has already passed by the Yue Dong[5] Gate, and is currently in the front courtyard looking at the hibiscus flowers.”

At this point, Xu Feng realized he was telling the truth, and the smile slowly faded from his face. His right hand, which had no power left in it, curled up, and he withdrew it into the expanse of his wide sleeve. He had surreptitiously counted the days and thought to himself that the Palace Master hadn’t stepped into the Cui Zhu Pavilion for at least two to three months. Why would he come today all of a sudden?

He thought it would be great if that person never showed up again for the rest of his life, but he didn’t have the ability to go chase that person away. And so he had to get up and go to greet him.

By his side, Jin Shu said, “Young Master, are you not going to change your clothes first? Aiyo[6], you should probably also change the hairpin in your hair. I remember that there is still one made from jasper[7]  inside the chest.”

Xu Feng couldn’t help but smile bitterly. That person made someone as average looking as him into a male concubine just for the mere purpose of humiliating him. Why would he care about what clothes he was wearing, or what hairpin he was using? However, Jin Shu had good intentions, so he couldn’t bear to scold him either. So, he straightened out the worn-out clothing on his torso and went ahead towards the front courtyard.

The hibiscus flowers in the front courtyard had been planted last year, and because they had been well cared for, the blooming flowers were especially gorgeous. They were very dazzling, clothed in their brilliant red. The Palace Master of the Ji Le[8] Palace was standing in front of the flowering tree; he was enjoying the view of a flower that was about to bloom with single-hearted devotion.

The Ji Le Palace was seen as an unorthodox sect within Jiang Hu[9], all because the most powerful martial arts skill in the sect could only be trained by having dual cultivation between two married ones[10]. As a result, the palace was very selective when choosing disciples, and only selected the most attractive people. Naturally, the most outstanding of them all was the Palace Master. Today, he wore a light cyan robe, with his hair pinned up by a golden crown. His pupils were jet-black and his long eyebrows arched towards his temple. Contrasted against the hibiscus flowers that resembled flames, his complexion appeared increasingly more like jade. Without speaking, he smiled, power and prestige emanated from him to the greatest extent.

Xu Feng loathed him from the bottom of his heart. He walked towards him and stood at a three-step distance away from him, and called out lukewarmly, “Palace Master.”

He Tingzhou didn’t pay attention to him at all, and just continued to observe the flowers. He ignored Xu Feng for a complete quarter of an hour before he turned around, and swept his eyes over Xu Feng, taking careful measure of him.

He Tingzhou usually always came at night. After pinning Xu Feng down beneath him and doing shameful acts, he usually left before it got bright outside. Perhaps it was because he didn’t like Xu Feng’s appearance, but he never gave him a second glance. But now, who knew what had bewitched him to actually lead him to look at him, just as how he was looking at the single flower stem.

Xu Feng felt like prey that was being targeted by a venomous snake, and felt uneasy from head to toe, so he said obligingly, “If Palace Master likes these flowers, just call someone over to dig them up and send them over.”

He Tingzhou smiled slightly and said, “If I move them to a different location, I’m afraid they would not survive.”

These words seemed to carry a deeper meaning; Xu Feng didn’t understand it yet, but He Tingzhou had already begun waving his hand and said, “Let’s talk after we go inside.”

Jin Shu, that little one was very quick-witted and had already brewed some fine tea leaves. Once He Tingzhou took a seat after entering, he was right on time to offer him the aromatic tea.

Xu Feng understood his own status, and didn’t dare to sit in the presence of the Palace Master, so he obediently stood on the side, but to his surprise, He Tingzhou beckoned towards him, and said, “Sit.”

Xu Feng’s heart tightened with worry as he sat down, and thought to himself that this was also one of this person’s great talents. He would always be smiling no matter the situation, making it so that no one could read him. It was like that day when He Tingzhou had crippled his right hand; he held a sharp sword that shone with coldness within his hand, and pearls of blood had trickled down it, drop by drop. He had that smiling expression on his face that was tender with emotions, even though it was more moving than any other time.

Xu Feng wasn’t really an individual intimidated by death, but when he faced He Tingzhou, he always felt some sort of unspeakable fear. It was only because of that time when he had offended this person when he was young and arrogant, that he’d fallen into the absurd and yet ludicrous situation that he was in now.

He Tingzhou’s gaze circled around the interior of the room, and he frowned, “This room is pretty clean, but it’s just a little bit too plain.”

Xu Feng definitely wasn’t going to respond, Jin Shu worried for him on the inside and said hurriedly, “Young Master usually prefers peace and quiet, and is living quite comfortably. If the Palace Master would be willing to come by more often, then this place could become a lot more lively.”

He spoke very frankly and didn’t hold back. He Tingzhou looked like he was listening, yet not really listening, and just ignored him. He turned to Xu Feng and said, “I’ve haven’t asked you yet, but how old are you this year?”

Xu Feng was baffled, and he didn’t understand his meaning in asking such a question. He replied, “My zodiac animal is the dragon, I am twenty-two years old this year.”

He Tingzhou nodded his head, he revealed a strange smile, and said, “Then I am older than you by six years.”

He continued to ask, “What day is your birthday?”

“Since I was young, I was taken in by my master who took care of me. I do not know what day I was born. I only know the day that my master picked me up, the twelfth of the seventh month, which is considered my birthday.

“What about your birth parents?”

“Twenty years ago, there was a great drought in Ji Zhong[11]. My parents grabbed me and escaped the area. But they passed away one after another after contracting an illness. Once again, I was homeless and under harsh conditions for a period of time, then I happened to meet my master.”

He Tingzhou’s expression twitched slightly, and he asked, “Apart from them, do you not have any other relatives?”

Being interrogated like this, Xu Feng already had his guard up, and replied after thinking carefully, “I also used to have an older brother, but we lost touch while escaping. It has been many years since I have heard any news about him, and I do not know if he is dead or alive either.”

He Tingzhou listened to what he said, and just stared at him without looking away. He sighed lightly, and said, “So according to what you have said, you still have an older brother.”

Xu Feng thought to himself, “Whether I have an older brother or not, what does it have to do with you?” Could this person want to capture his long-lost brother as well and use him to threaten him? But thinking about his current situation again, if He Tingzhou wanted to crush him, it would be as easy as crushing an ant. He Tingzhou had no reason to expend that much energy.

Be that as it may, he didn’t dare speak so freely. He Tingzhou asked about his past again, with which Xu Feng answered vaguely, glancing over the details.

He Tingzhou didn’t pursue any further, and he spoke pleasantly for a brief moment, then turned his head to look outside at the color of the sky and said to Jin Shu, “It looks like it is about time, call someone over to set up for dinner.”

Jin Shu beamed with joy on his face. He bowed with a yes, and then scurried out.

All throughout the Ji Le Palace, there wasn’t a person who hadn’t known that the Palace Master didn’t like to eat meals at the same table with others. Only a few of his most trusted tangzhu[12] had had a couple of opportunities to drink with him. As far as the other concubines and male pets were concerned, of course, they hadn’t even had a chance. Today, unexpectedly, he had someone come set up dinner at the Cui Zhu Pavilion. The time for his young master’s lucky break was definitely here.

Jin Shu went to order people. Not long after, several green-clothed girls came over, carrying lunch boxes. After they had set up the table, they stood on the side, ready to serve.

Xu Feng glanced at the table, and saw that out of the five different dishes, four of them were ones that he loved to eat, especially the sweet and sour quick-fried fish, because of its deliciously sweet and sour flavor and tenderness. He always loved to eat the fishtail. At this time, since He Tingzhou had motioned towards him, without any more reservation, Xu Feng lifted his chopsticks to pick at the fishtail.

Unexpectedly, he hadn’t even touched the fish when he heard a ‘pa’ sound. It turned out that He Tingzhou’s chopsticks had bumped against his own.

Both men were dumbfounded.

Xu Feng pulled his chopsticks away first, put on a fake smile, and said, “Palace Master, please enjoy your meal.”

He settled for second best and went to go snatch up the braised pork.

In the end, there was another ‘pa’ sound yet again, the two pairs of chopsticks knocked against each other head-on once again.

Jin Shu, who watched from the side, raised his eyebrows. And one of the servant girls couldn’t hold it in and laughed with a ‘pfft’.

Xu Feng couldn’t figure out if He Tingzhou was doing this on purpose or not, so he just stopped moving his chopsticks altogether.

He Tingzhou stared blankly at the table of food, and muttered to himself, “So it turns out that you also like to eat these.”

Afterward, he broke the fishtail off, then reached over to place it inside of Xu Feng’s bowl.

Xu Feng was surprised, and he held his bowl like he was holding a scalding hot yam. He couldn’t eat it, nor couldn’t he not eat it. Ordinarily, he had a big appetite, but due to the fact that He Tingzhou was sitting in front of him, he only managed to eat half a bowl before he was full.

He Tingzhou hadn’t eaten much either and kept staring at Xu Feng as they ate. But when Xu Feng returned his gaze, he would pretend that nothing was happening and avert his gaze.

Xu Feng felt that this person was thoroughly strange, but he couldn’t put his finger on exactly what was strange. Even though he had been a male concubine for three years, he actually still didn’t know He Tingzhou all that well. He only knew that this man was extremely lecherous and that that behavior of his had already become a part of his personality. If there was a beautiful person that was his type, he would use any means to get his hands on them. It was only because, in his prime, he’d foiled this man’s plans, and rescued the beauty he was yearning for, that his martial art skills had been crippled, and it was also the reason behind why he was at the Ji Le Palace, suffering his fill of humiliation.

Xu Feng rubbed the scar on his wrist, and quietly concealed the hatred that lived at the bottom of his heart so that it wouldn’t leak onto his face.

He wasn’t the spirited, sword-wielding youth of Jiang Hu anymore.

He knew that most of the time, if he only exercised patience, then he would have different opportunities.

After the two people had eaten, the group of green-clothed girls retreated one by one. He Tingzhou held his hands behind him and circled the room, and ended up going for the book lying on the couch[13], turning the pages. With a smile on his face, he said, “This is the type of book you usually read?”

Xu Feng’s face heated up, and said, “I am an uneducated one, naturally, what I read is also ordinary.”

“It looks pretty interesting to me.” He Tingzhou spoke as he sat down on the couch. He called for Jin Shu to move the light closer and started to read the book with gusto.

Xu Feng couldn’t really interrupt him and had no alternative but to sit down by him in vain. He saw by the color of the sky that it was getting later and later. Jin Shu gave him a meaningful glance, conveying that it was time to serve the Palace Master to bed.

Xu Feng pretended not to see anything and wished that he could become a piece of wood. It would’ve been good if he could’ve gotten past this muddleheaded and thoughtlessly, but he understood his position as a male concubine, and that the only reason that He Tingzhou had come was so that he could sleep with him. It didn’t matter if he was willing or not, in the end, he couldn’t run away from the tormenting affair. He thought of it as if it was a punishment, and if he just laid on the bed and closed his eyes, he could endure it until it was over.

Firm with his decision, Xu Feng nodded his head towards Jin Shu.

After receiving instructions, Jin Shu hastened inside to prepare the bed.

He Tingzhou was skilled in martial arts, so naturally, this hadn’t escaped his notice. He lifted his head and asked, “What are you two, master and servant, riddling each other for?”

“It is not early anymore. I’ve let Jin Shu go in to prepare the bed.”

“Mn, it is about time to retire.”

Xu Feng walked forward a step, and said with some stiffness, “Allow me to assist the Palace Master to retire for the night.”

He Tingzhou was dumbfounded at first, then he raised his eyebrows, and asked with some surprise, “What did you say?”

Xu Feng was even more surprised and asked in response, “Does the Palace Master not want me to serve him?”

“Of course not!”

After He Tingzhou understood what he meant, he practically jumped up from the couch, and the large, vigorous movement gave Xu Feng a scare. He knew that he had lost his composure, and glanced at the submissive young man in front of him, feeling frustrated.

He still vaguely remembered what Xu Feng was like before. He used to be a young boy who had just entered Jiang Hu, and yet he dared to hold a sword and point it at him. But, the energetic youth from before had already been ruined by He Tingzhou’s own hands.

He Tingzhou inhaled deeply; he was afraid that if he spoke what he kept inside, it would frighten Xu Feng, so he spoke tenderly, “You should sleep first. I shall come visit you again when I am free.”

Xu Feng hadn’t thought he could evade misfortune so easily, and still didn’t believe it, and said, “Palace Master is not going to stay and spend the night?”

“Not staying, not staying.”

He Tingzhou waved his hands, and walked away without looking back, and without any sign of his usual calm demeanor.

His appearance of having been defeated while fleeing the scene made it seem like Xu Feng was some sort of the lowest kind of shameless, obscene man, and that he was afraid that if he’d stayed too long, his purity would have been tarnished by Xu Feng.

Xu Feng was very bewildered, and he almost couldn’t tell who was the male pet.

By then, Jin Shu had come out after preparing the bed, and when he saw that his master had been unable to retain the Palace Master, he felt a burst of bitterness, and until it was time to sleep, he still had an expression showing that he hated iron for not becoming steel[14].

Xu Feng hadn’t bothered with him, and just climbed into bed and fell asleep. He had escaped the suffering that would’ve taken a small army to stop, which allowed him to sleep soundly. And it wasn’t long before he started to dream.

Within his dream, he could hear the clip-clop sound of horse hooves. It was like he had returned back to the year when he was nineteen years old. He had just descended from the mountain and was walking down the main road towards Luo Yang[15] all by himself.

The sun was scorching hot, and the foreheads of those in the sun were covered in sweat. Xu Feng complained under his breath as he wiped away his sweat. When he was on the mountain, he had read a lot of huaben novels, which influenced him to set out into Jiang Hu without a care and help those in need like a hero. It wasn’t until he’d left the mountain that he had realized it wasn’t as fulfilling of a dream as he’d previously thought.

First of all, you couldn’t wear white. Great, sandy winds blew across the road, making it so that it wouldn’t even be two days before the clothes you were wearing turned ash gray, and washing them was a pain in the ass. The next thing was, you couldn’t eat or drink in large quantities, or it wouldn’t even be two days before you’d exhausted your stash of travel money. In the end, the only thing a person could do was to go out and work hard. The cyan steel sword that he’d equipped at his waist was used to chop wood and to go hunting.

Worst of all, he hadn’t had enough money to buy a horse either, and it made him really jealous to see other people urging their horses along.

At that moment, he heard the sound of hooves ringing out on the road again. Xu Feng looked back, only to see a horse-drawn carriage rushing towards him. The bodies of the two horses that pulled the carriage were entirely snow-white; there was no hint of variegation. The carriage was adorned lavishly, making it obvious that it was owned by a wealthy family. The weird thing was that, surprisingly, no one was driving the carriage. It was just the two horses violently charging through, raising up a cloud of dust in their wake.

It wasn’t until it got closer, that Xu Feng noticed among the horses, one of them had a dagger stabbed into its back hip. Fresh blood flowed from the wound in a steady stream. The horse was suffering greatly, which was why it had been running so wildly earlier. In its panic, it was having difficulty orienting itself, and the horse-drawn carriage began to gradually drift off the main road. At a glance, one could see that it wouldn’t have been too long before it would have crashed into the large tree ahead of it.

Xu Feng swore and quickly used qinggong[16] to chase after it. He wasn’t what one would’ve considered talented, but still, he’d trained consistently and diligently, so the foundation of his martial arts wasn’t bad. With a few light jumps, he leaped onto the carriage.

It became apparent that the injured horse couldn’t be controlled, so Xu Feng made a decision in the heat of the moment to unsheathe his sword, and cut the reins free. This allowed the two horses to sprint off violently, and the body of the carriage slowed down to a stop. While he was dealing with the mess, for what seemed like ages, there hadn’t been a single sign of movement from within the carriage. He had an expectation of what had happened inside, but once he opened the curtain to take a look, he was met with surprise.

It turned out that the inside of the carriage was a chaotic mess and it looked like it had been ransacked by someone. There was a person lying down stiffly inside, with their face down, which made it hard to tell if they were dead or alive.

Since Xu Feng had already stuck his nose into this situation, he should follow it through to the end, so he walked over, flipped the person’s body around, and checked to see if he was breathing.

The person was a young man around twenty years old. His entire body emanated wealth and he was exceedingly handsome. And although his face was as white as paper, he was still breathing, thankfully. Just as Xu Feng wanted to look and see if he was injured anywhere, the man suddenly opened his eyes. Only a ‘pu’[17] sound could be heard as the man opened his mouth, and spat out a silver needle.

The action was so unexpected that if it weren’t for Xu Feng’s quick reaction, it would have pierced and blinded him. Even so, the silver needle still brushed past his cheek, drawing a long trace of blood across it.

Xu Feng immediately pushed the man away, and yelled, “Why were you trying to hurt me?”

The young man’s face paled even further, and he spoke in a low voice, “Evil crook. I would rather die than go with you.”

Xu Feng asked in confusion, “Who did you call an evil crook?”

“You are not one of Ji Le Palace’s men?”

Xu Feng had trekked across Jiang Hu, so naturally, he had heard of the reputation of the Ji Le Palace before and so he quickly replied, “The Ji Le Palace is tyrannical, and they have done a great number of evil deeds. How could someone like me, who is here to help people and bring justice, be associated with such an unorthodox place?”

The youth showed a skeptical look on his face; he didn’t believe him at the moment.

Xu Feng then explained, one step at a time, about how he’d seen the horse-drawn carriage running rampant on the main road, and also about how he stopped this matter. And just in case the young man didn’t believe him, he also revealed to him which sect he was from. His sect wasn’t terribly famous within Jiang Hu, but it was a righteous sect with a little known name. After the young man heard such, he was relieved, as expected.

“Xiao Xiong Di[18],” The young man let out a few breaths as his eyes slightly shone with a strange sparkle. “You and I are strangers who met by chance. I shouldn’t inconvenience you, but I am in a dire situation right now, and I want to ask you for a favor”

Xu Feng didn’t dare to promise recklessly, and just said, “There is no harm in saying what one thinks.”

The young man’s line of sight fell upon Xu Feng’s sword. He gritted his teeth, and said, “Please end my life with your sword, so that I will not fall into the Ji Le Palace’s grasp, and be humiliated by those vile crooks.”

Xu Feng was flabbergasted and didn’t know what to do. He would never have guessed that the young man would want them to kill him. Not to mention that he’d never killed anyone before, even if he had to kill someone, he couldn’t just slaughter the innocent. After all, he was inexperienced. He immediately lost his grounding and said, “I… I cannot do that…”

The young man was extremely resolute. He became silent at once and threw himself at Xu Feng to fight for his cyan steel sword. It’s unknown if it was because he was injured or poisoned, but the young man couldn’t exert any strength, and it hadn’t taken very many tries before Xu Feng stopped him.

Xu Feng said, “If you are afraid of being caught by the Ji Le Palace’s people, then why do you not quickly flee for your life? There is no need for you to seek such a method.”

“You don’t know how powerful the Ji Le Palace is. Moreover, this time, the Palace Master came personally. It won’t be long before they catch up to me. It is simply impossible to evade them.”

“I see that your horse is very faithful. The uninjured one has returned. Let us ditch the carriage and ride the horse, then we would definitely be able to move much faster.”

The young man merely shook his head and smiled bitterly as he spoke, “That won’t work. If I fall into the clutches of the Palace Master, the shame and humiliation I will receive are fine, but I am only afraid that I will tarnish my family’s reputation. The brothers and sisters that come after me won’t be able to lift up their heads without shame.”

Xu Feng listened to him speak. He had presumed that the man’s background wasn’t ordinary, and seeing how determined he was, his chivalrous heart jumped inevitably. He muttered under his breath and made a decision. He reached out his hand to pick up the man.

The young man spoke in shock, “What are you doing? Let go of me!”

Xu Feng carried him out of the carriage. With one leap, he jumped onto a large tree on the side of the road and placed the man between two of its branches. He concealed him with the lush expanse of tree leaves, hiding all traces of the man.

The young man asked, “What is the meaning of this?”

Xu Feng faced him and looked at him. “Even if the Ji Le Palace’s men catch up, they will definitely be following the wheel tracks. As long as I continue to drive forward in the carriage, they would never suspect that you would be hiding here.”

The young man was quite clever, and immediately understood what he meant. “Xiao Xiong Di, that is way too dangerous. You are not the Ji Le Palace’s opponent…”

“Don’t worry. I know my own limits and I won’t go head-on against them. Even though I only know a little bit of martial arts, I could still manage to escape if I wanted to.” He suspected that since the young man was in a bit of trouble, his family’s subordinates would be urgently looking for him. He could only hope to buy him a couple of hours to help him escape this misfortune.

After Xu Feng finished saying those words, all the while disregarding the young man’s persuasions, he arrived at the phrase, “I am sure we will meet again someday”, then lightly jumped down from the tree. He brought the uninjured horse back to the carriage, whipped it, and rode the carriage, disappearing into the dust.

Because of the sun’s intensity, there weren’t really any people on the main road. Xu Feng had been driving the horse-drawn carriage for about an hour when he suddenly heard a burst of hoof beats erupt from behind him. At least ten or more people rode behind him. His heart started to beat wildly. He knew that the Ji Le Palace’s people had caught up to him, so he hurriedly whipped the horse more urgently. Suddenly he could hear the sound of laughter which resembled the sound of silver bells resounding in his ear.

“Young Master Mu Rong, our Palace Master has kindly invited you to be a guest of Ji Le Palace. Why are you unwilling to give us even a little bit of face?”

The girl’s voice was delicate, soft, and seductive to the bone. It was clear that it came from afar, but it sounded like it was right next to his ear, and gave him goosebumps which were nearly impossible to suppress.

It wasn’t until that moment that Xu Feng learned the young man’s surname was Mu Rong, he didn’t know whether or not he was part of the Mu Rong aristocratic household. He was indeed at a young and vigorous age. After hearing the woman’s laughter, he only felt his blood rushing, and couldn’t help but look back for a glance.

He only saw that there really were at least ten people behind him, and could barely discern that there was a cyan-clothed person who was the leader in the group. The cyan-clothed person wore a bamboo hat upon their head. It was too far to see their features clearly. Their hands, which were holding the reins, were the only things that were exposed. Their fingers were slender and powerful, and the finger joints were distinct, reflecting against the jet-black reins within their hands, they were truly as lustrously white as jade.

The cyan-clothed person brandished their hand, and a person rode out from the crowd at once, chasing straight at Xu Feng. A woman rode the horse. She couldn’t be considered young, but she had excellent bone structure and was extremely beautiful. She grinned, “Xiao Xiong Di, with such a bright sun, aren’t you getting tired driving the carriage? Why don’t you let Jie Jie[19] wipe away your sweat for you?”

Her voice was very seductive. She was definitely the owner of the laugh from earlier.

Xu Feng’s heart shook, and he was almost affected by her words. He calmed his state of mind down immediately, gritted his teeth, and continued to push the carriage along.

The woman had excellent horsemanship, and it wasn’t long until she caught up. She conjured up a whip from seemingly nowhere, and laughed, “Xiao Xiong Di, why are you running away? Do not be afraid, Jie Jie is very fond of you.”

She spoke sweetly, yet she was definitely not one to show mercy when completing a task. With a swish, her whip flew towards Xu Feng’s face.

Xu Feng had unsheathed his sword long ago. He simultaneously dodged sideways and brandished his sword to return fire. But his skill in martial arts was only mediocre to start with, and he hadn’t had much experience facing others. He only managed to make ten moves under the woman’s control, before his sword was caught by the whip, and he was thrown off the horse-drawn carriage, along with his sword.

With a side character like him, the woman naturally hadn’t thought about him too much. She just smiled sweetly at him and quickly moved onto the horse-drawn carriage. She said, “Please come out, Young Master Mu Rong.”

As she spoke, she lifted the curtain, which made her gasp with surprise. She yelled, “Mu Rong Fei is not in the carriage!”

After Xu Feng had fallen onto the ground, he remained motionless. It wasn’t until he heard the woman shouting that he jumped up, and used qinggong to charge forward. To start with, he already knew that he wasn’t the Ji Le Palace’s opponent, so he came up with a strategy to protect his life. He planned on taking advantage of the fact that everyone would be distracted by the horse-drawn carriage to look for an opportunity to escape.

It was a good plan, but as they say, there are skies beyond the sky and people beyond people. He had only managed to run about a hundred zhang[20] when he heard someone’s disapproving laughter. The laughter was in close proximity, as if the person was standing right next to his ear. The tip of Xu Feng’s heart shivered. There hadn’t even been enough time for him to turn around before someone grabbed his clothes at the middle of his back, and pulled him down then dragged him back.

Xu Feng only saw the sky spinning, and a short while after, he was thrown onto the ground. It was a very heavy fall. He had barely managed to lift up his head to discover that the person who had pulled him back was indeed the cyan-clothed leader. At this time, that person had taken the bamboo hat off their head, and Xu Feng could see his appearance clearly. He couldn’t help but stare blankly.

He had long heard about the Ji Le Palace’s bad reputation, and thinking about such unorthodoxy, he had anticipated a crooked demon, since they were, naturally, ugly as hell. But to his surprise, the cyan-clothed person had a handsome brow and clear eyes, with a smile upon his thin lips. Contrary to what he had thought, the man was several times more handsome than a painting.

Xu Feng was dazed. The woman from before came up and bowed. She said, “Palace Master, I do not see any trace of Young Master Mu Rong. I am afraid… he has already fled.”

The Palace Master laughed, “Mu Rong Fei has been infected with chunchan[21] poison, he definitely could not have gone far.”

He muttered to himself, and said, “Send some people to go back to search along the main road, especially along the side of the road where someone could easily hide. We cannot let him get away, no matter what.”

Xu Feng saw that his guess wasn’t wrong, he couldn’t help but take a furtive look at them, yet he saw that the Palace Master was also looking at him as he spoke to the woman, “Liu Yue, examine this youngster who was driving the carriage.”

Liu Yue replied with a “yes,” then walked up to Xu Feng with the whip in her hand, and said, “Xiao Xiong Di, you are so young. I would hate to kill you. As long as you obediently tell us where Mu Rong Fei has gone, I can ask the Palace Master for a favor and beg for your life. How about it?”

Xu Feng spit in contempt, and cursed, “Shameless bastard, who would want you to beg for them?”

“What a truly stubborn personality.”

Not only was Liu Yue not mad, but her smile was chillingly beautiful. She was smiling when she suddenly flicked her wrist, and the whip violently thrashed against Xu Feng’s body. She had excellent control, and didn’t hit any vital parts, but it was still enough to make it hurt like hell.

Since Xu Feng first started exploring Jiang Hu, had he ever experienced this degree of cruelty? At the moment, he grunted and an ‘ah’ sound came out. He wasn’t willing to show any weakness, so immediately after, he clenched his jaw tightly shut.

Liu Yue didn’t give him a chance to catch his breath, and quickly whipped him again and again, raining them down on him like a hurricane.

Xu Feng couldn’t withstand it and writhed on the ground in pain. He couldn’t suppress his blood-curdling screams anymore, the screams came out of his mouth unceasingly. The ash gray garment he was wearing was quickly dyed red with fresh blood, and it was getting mixed with the dirt on the ground. His appearance was very miserable.

It wasn’t until then that Liu Yue stopped, and asked, “Say it, where did Mu Rong Fei go?”

“I… I do not know…”

Of course, Liu Yue didn’t believe him, and said, “What is your relationship with Mu Rong for you to be so willing to sacrifice yourself on his behalf? Could it be that you think he was born handsome and that you have even come to like him?”

Xu Feng merely used one breath and said, “Young Master Mu Rong and I are just strangers who met by chance. We do not have any relationship at all.”

“Then why are you unwilling to tell us his whereabouts?”

The wounds on Xu Feng’s body throbbed with fiery pain. It wasn’t easy to move his mouth, he spoke one word at a time, “I saw injustice on the road, so I grabbed my sword to defend against it.”

Liu Yue listened and spoke to the Palace Master, “Could it be that this boy is stupid?”

The Palace Master smiled while stroking his hand, “Good. How righteous of you to see injustice on the road. How righteous of you, to draw your sword to defend against it.”

After saying that, he grabbed Xu Feng’s cyan steel sword from the ground, and smiled wryly at him.

Xu Feng locked eyes with him, and could only feel a burst of coldness flood his head. He involuntarily shivered. Afterwards, he heard the Palace Master use a quiet, yet pleasant to listen to voice, to say, “I am curious. If I render your right hand useless, then how will you be able to continue rescuing others?”
