Flower Vase: Chapter 17

Flower Vase: Chapter 17

After New Year, Gu Yan joined a new film crew.

That Wuxia movie with the huge investments and huge production had an exceedingly sentimental title. It was called “Ebony Locks[1]”. Back when they were discussing film contracts, they had agreed on dual male protagonists. Gu Yan would play the graceful lord of a distinguished family, while another big name actor would play the wide eyed youngster who first entered Jianghu. Both had fallen in love at the same time with the beautiful female lead who was in league with the antagonists. And then it was just various schemes and conflicts, emotional entanglements… What came as a surprise though as the script was changed every which way, was that by the time filming had formally started, Gu Yan’s role was cut significantly. He had turned from the male protagonist in name to the male supporting character in actuality.

That wasn’t the most critical issue though. Most importantly was that the distinguished young lord he would be playing would have his looks destroyed for the sake of the female protagonist, with a long, long scar remaining on his face. He would become poor and destitute, down in the dumps. By the conclusion, he would end up giving his life for the female protagonist. The white-clad, dapper, rich young lord of renown only appeared in the memory sequences, with less than five minutes of total film time. The vast majority of the time, he had to film with a disfigured face.

This wasn’t easy for Gu Yan at all.

After all, his current popularity was mostly built up through his pretty looks. Now that the face, the biggest selling point, was concealed, it would only draw attention to his weak acting. Plus, the audience had long become accustomed to his handsome appearance on the silver screen. It would likely be impossible for many to accept him now, with a sudden scar on his face. That’s why an idol like him usually wouldn’t change career paths easily, it was just too much of a risk.

But the contract was already signed, what else could he do?

Not as if he could throw the script in the director’s face, right?

If he was still with Qin Zhiyuan, there was no way he would have encountered something like this. But now that he was without a sponsor, he could only bear with whatever came his way.

There was an uproar on the Internet as soon as Gu Yan’s first film stills were released. In the photos he wore a shabby old frock, with a worn-out iron sword on his shoulders, his expression indifferent and unconcerned. The long, long scar on his face was particularly glaring. The crew had released a set of pictures long before, with him as the white-clad lord holding a jade flute. With the two images put side by side, the contrast was especially stark.

The fans divided into two camps over this, and were up in arms about it over the Internet. Some thought that the stylist was taking pleasure in ruining his image, and were stubbornly refusing to accept it. There were also the ones who thought that Gu Yan wasn’t getting any younger, and it was time for him to go the method acting route, and expressed their undying support… Either way, the film attracted a lot of eyeballs before filming had even begun.

His sufferings only really started after filming began.

Gu Yan’s disfigured getup needed quite a few hours just for applying and removing his makeup. Sometimes he had to get up while it was still dark, the makeup had to be applied early, but his segments weren’t scheduled until the very end of the day, and work wouldn’t be completed until midnight. By nighttime, his face was about to have an allergic reaction to the fake scar stuck to his face all day, but he still had to continue filming the very next day. Not to mention, the character he played had the most tragic luck, he was always getting beat up, hurt, spitting up blood, every scene was rough to film. Without his pretty face to back him up, he couldn’t even be a flower vase, and the director was always tearing him a new asshole[2].

After filming for some days, Gu Yan got a decent sense of what was going on. He must be rubbing someone the wrong way, and they were purposely doing this to mess with him.

Even someone as dim as Xiao Chen figured out the shenanigans. One day at noon during lunchtime, he stealthily scooted next to his ear and asked, “Yan Ge, did you tick someone off recently?”

Gu Yan stopped short.

Xiao Chen then continued, “President Qin hadn’t been at the company for these past two months, I heard that lots of decisions were called by his little brother.”

Gu Yan wasn’t at all surprised at this.

This immature way of messing with someone could only be done by Lil Whitey Qin.

He saw Xiao Chen’s fretful face, and couldn’t help himself as he reached out to pinch those round cheeks as he said, “It’s nothing, don’t worry yourself silly. You’ve had a rough couple of months too, I’ll give you a raise next month.”

Xiao Chen had a blank look on his face, “But the company pays my wages.”

Gu Yan said in an amused voice, “What, I can’t give you a bonus out of my own pocket?”

Only then did Xiao Chen start cheering.

Gu Yan smiled briefly, he thought that there were still lots of little joys in life.

They had been just talking about Qin Feng that day, and only a few days later, Young Master Qin appeared at the film location with a swagger. He had dumped the model girlfriend, and was recently putting all his efforts towards chasing the female lead in the film, Bai Weiwei. Bai Weiwei was a young actress who was currently at the top of her fame, with a pretty face and a sweet singing voice. Most importantly, she knew how to handle herself, she was amazingly sociable, and had someone backing her at every turn, everything she appeared in became popular.

With the bit of emotional intelligence that Qin Feng had, he had a long, arduous road in front of him if he wanted to get a hold of her.

Perhaps Qin Feng took Gu Yan’s joking words that day seriously, whenever he saw him, he always got the willies; he was terrified that he would really go and seduce his own old man. He no longer dared to provoke Gu Yan directly, but he hated him to the point that his teeth gnashed. So, he would always love walking back and forth in front of Gu Yan, with an arrogant attitude of “I’m screwing with you”.

Gu Yan realized that Qin Feng was really an efficient tool for regulating his mood. No matter how tough filming was, he could always be amused by seeing Young Master Qin.

But a small incident happened when Qin Feng came to hang around the set that day. A wooden stand used for holding props fell down and almost landed on him. Gu Yan had been standing close by at the time, and quickly gave Qin Feng a push. Although that made him stumble a few steps and almost fall to the ground, at least that handsome face wasn’t injured.

Qin Feng froze up right then, and it took him a long time to come back to his senses, he was still shocked while he stared at Gu Yan. But not only did he not have a word of thanks, he became so angry his face turned red, and he yelled at Gu Yan about not minding his own business. He had originally come to ask Bai Weiwei out for a meal, but he didn’t even mention it at all, and left in a huff.

Gu Yan was mystified by him.

What was funnier came later. Qin Feng hadn’t made an appearance for two whole days, by the third day, his former model girlfriend also stormed onto the set, her face full of rage. Gu Yan seemed to remember that her name was Lili, she had very long legs and a very slim waist, her makeup was always impeccably done. But this time, her hair was unkempt and disheveled, her eyes red and puffy, the makeup, a muddy mess on her face.

What else could a woman lose composure over? Most likely it was a jealous quarrel.

Gu Yan had figured she had come to make trouble for Bai Weiwei, and others in the film crew thought so as well. Yet she finally came to a stop in front of Gu Yan, and said with her teeth clenched, “It’s you!”

Gu Yan was momentarily befuddled.

The other measured him up and down with her arms crossed, and said, “Qin Feng was right, these looks do draw people in.”

It was only then that Gu Yan realized that she probably mistook him for someone else. He was just thinking about explaining when Qin Feng’s former girlfriend yelled again, “You think Qin Feng would really like men? He’s just playing with you.”

“Miss…”

“He dumped me just now, later on he’s gonna dump you the same way! What’s so great about you? It’s just that pretty face!”

Gu Yan was just preparing to film the scenes before the disfiguration, his all white ensemble was quite dashing, and he himself was rather satisfied with his own face. So, he nodded in agreement, “Sure, it’s a kind of skill, picking a good body to be born into[3].”

This indifferent attitude lit the fuses.

The woman’s voice immediately rose up to a crescendo, “You… shameless!”

Smack.

With that sharp sound, Gu Yan got a slap to his face.

This was too much of a new experience, and he was briefly stunned. To be honest, the slap didn’t have too much force behind it, but his skin was very fair, and the finger marks quickly appeared on his face as his cheeks became slightly swollen.

Gu Yan didn’t say a single thing, he only frowned slightly, and slowly turned around to reach for something inside his bag. The crew blanched in fright, they all thought that he was going to pull out some kind of weapon, and hurriedly rushed over to intervene.

How ridiculous, how could he raise his hand to a woman?

Plus, his own hand will hurt if he hits someone, it’s not a bargain deal at all.

Gu Yan rummaged through his bag, then finally found a business card from inside his wallet, and lightly tossed it towards that young model as he said, “Defamation, plus assault. You should speak with my lawyer about the reparation issues.”

This scene was filmed by certain interested parties, and appeared in the entertainment section of the newspapers the very next day.

The pictures were a little blurry, but it did have a gimmicky headline – “Lovers? Rivals? A Direct Clash on Set!”

The exclamation mark at the end was startling to see. It could give someone a fright if they just happened to catch a glimpse. The report made no mention of Qin Feng, only insinuating that Gu Yan led an indecent private life, and had murky relations with multiple men and women.

If Qin Zhiyuan was here, no media would post this. Now… now of course, it was no longer like that.

Gu Yan felt that he was really wronged, he’d never even touched a single hair of Lil Whitey Qin’s, and now he’d gotten this reputation all for nothing.

It was barely two days after the scandal had hit the news when Gu Yan received a phone call from a dear friend. “Superstar, I didn’t give my card to you just for you to use it as a projectile weapon!”

The woman’s clear voice was full of indignation.

Gu Yan had been watching TV on the couch just then, he hurriedly pulled the phone handset away from him and said, “Lawyer Wang, please be mindful of your professional image.”

Wang Yali snorted a few times on the other side of the phone, “Tell me, how are you going to make this up to me?”

“A free advertisement for your services wasn’t enough? I haven’t even charged you any shout-out fees.”

“Gu, Yan!”

Gu Yan had a good laugh before he cleared his throat, and said seriously, “Do you have time Wednesday night? My treat.”

“Used to be I could never get a hold of you, how come you’re free now?”

Gu Yan went a bit quiet, and said, “My work schedule isn’t as packed as before.”

The busy round of work from New Year’s was mostly what Qin Zhiyuan had scheduled for him from before. Other than the movie that he was filming now, most of his work was completed. His manager hadn’t called him for a long time either, chances are, he would have more and more free time after this.

Gu Yan thought to himself as he told her the address for a certain high-class restaurant.

That restaurant was located in the hottest district downtown. It had an elegant name, and was very tastefully furnished. Most importantly, the dishes were exquisite yet original. It was packed almost every single day; if there wasn’t a prior reservation, it was difficult to get a table at night.

When Wang Yali rushed there to meet him on Wednesday night, Gu Yan was already sitting in a private room on the second floor, and was looking at the view outside the window through his sunglasses.

“Is it not going to be an issue for a superstar to come to such a busy place? Wouldn’t you be recognized by your fans?” Wang Yali took a deliberate jab at him as she flipped open the menu, “Since it’s your treat today, I’m not gonna be holding back.”

Gu Yan took off his sunglasses and smiled, “No worries, just order whatever you want to eat.”

Wang Yali had always had a straightforward personality. She still was as energetic[4] as ever, even now that she was a working professional. As expected, she didn’t hesitate at all and ordered a full table of dishes.

Gu Yan didn’t have too many friends on account of his own personality, and she was one of his rare dear friends. The two of them casually chatted about what was going on recently in their lives. Of course, they mentioned that scandal as well, Gu Yan brushed past it with a simple “a misunderstanding”, and so Wang Yali didn’t continue to question him.

Halfway through the meal, Gu Yan tapped the tabletop with a finger as he threw out a sudden question, “What do you think about the menu here?”

“It’s decent, really good. Hmm, it can’t compare to your cooking though.”

“Do you want to meet the chef here?”

“Huh?” Wang Yali was a bit confused, “No, it’s fine.”

Gu Yan continued to ask, “Then, do you want to meet the owner of this place?”

Wang Yali was becoming even more confused, she raised her head, but instead saw Gu Yan with a hand under his chin as he gazed at her with a half-smile on his face. She was no fool, and immediately understood, she pointed a finger towards Gu Yan as she said, “You bastard[5], you…!”

Gu Yan was afraid that she would choke, he hurriedly poured a glass of water and handed it over.

Wang Yali just kicked at him under the table, “This is your restaurant? When did this happen?”

“I’ve been saving up for it forever, and when I had enough, I opened it.” When you make a living in that industry, you never know what’ll happen tomorrow, obviously you’ll need to find more than one path for yourself.

Wang Yali was annoyed by his reticence[6]. “Why didn’t you tell me earlier?”

Gu Yan picked up his chopsticks to get some food, he smiled as he said, “I only asked you to come after everything was settled. Else, if there wasn’t much business, and this place didn’t have any customers, then how embarrassing would that be for me.”

He was never the type to hold onto his pride, but he did have a mind of his own, and knew what he wanted. Once he’d made a decision, he’d stick to it until the very end, and no one could stop him.

“Well, whatever, you’ve always been like this.” Wang Yali knew him all too well, she flapped her hand at him and said, “You’ve always wanted to be a chef, but then you went into acting without even saying anything. And you even became a huge star without anyone noticing, it’s something amazing.”

Gu Yan didn’t mention the various complications that came in between, he only mildly said, “It’s just good luck.”

“Oh yeah, the money that your family owed from before…”

“It was paid off years ago.”

“That’s good.” Wang Yali raised the wine glass to toast him, “Either way, congratulations on becoming your own boss.”

Gu Yan touched his glass to hers, and said, “Lots of celebrities invest their savings, it’s not a huge deal.”

“It might not be worth mentioning for others, but it means something different for you. I know that this has been your dream since childhood. Oh, right, right, I also need to congratulate you on your dream coming true.”

Gu Yan thanked her, and slowly drank the wine in the glass. He didn’t give his usual smile, but only leisurely narrowed his eyes – that was his expression when he was actually happy.

Wang Yali’s eyes flitted around, she said, “Since we’re so close, you can give me a VIP card, right?”

Gu Yan of course said “Okay”, then he continued, “There’s something else I’ll have to trouble you with.”

“Hmm? What is it?”

“I’m planning to open another branch. The location’s already been decided, and the money’s all there too. All that’s missing is a legal advisor. There might be a lot of problems I’ll need to consult with you on. Dunno if you’re willing to help?”

“I charge a lot.”

“That’ll definitely be to your satisfaction.”

Gu Yan had said so much already, what reason did Wang Yali have to refuse? As she ate, she looked at Gu Yan and asked, “Should I now call you Boss Gu instead?”

“Hmm,” Gu Yan dragged his voice as he answered, he smiled as he turned his head, and said, “That sounds good.”

Translator’s Comments/Notes: I just have one thing to say. Gu Yan’s friend’s name is Yali, in Chinese this could also mean stress or a pear…hahahaha

Translator’s Notes:

[1] This term is fairly commonly seen in maudlin Chinese traditional poetry, often lamenting the cruel passage of time, usually along the lines of “it’s been blah blah number of years, her ebony locks have long turned to threads of silver…” It appears so much that it’s really cliche in songs, dramas, etc.

[2] Literally “dog blood pouring down one’s head”. In Imperial China, sometimes to break a witch’s hex, people would pour dog’s blood down the witch’s head. It basically means that the person is cussed out to the point that he is like the witch with blood pouring down his face without any recourse.

[3] Literally, “knowing how to reincarnate”, Chinese people have a long standing belief in rebirth due to Buddhist influence

[4] Literally “all wind and fire”, insinuating someone who has a very forceful and straightforward way of doing things

[5] She’s not actually insulting him, the term translates roughly to ‘stinky brat”, but that sounds a bit strange…

[6] Literally, “not enough of a friend”, this is a difficult concept to translate, it basically means that Wang Yali thought Gu Yan shouldn’t have kept anything from her since they’re such good friends.

Flower Vase: Chapter 3

Flower Vase: Chapter 3

Half a month later, the alluring Miss Tang Anna with the lovely smile, cleared up the gossip about her and a certain someone in a television program and conveniently promoted her new album that was about to be released, proving thoroughly that the earlier rumors had only been hype.

The Gu Yan, who wasn’t yet out of favor, was curled up on the couch, fiddling with the remote control, and said, “Doesn’t have much technical skill.”

Qin Zhiyuan, who had just put on his suit jacket, leaned closer and pecked his face. “It’s enough that we have the sales numbers, who cares about the technical skill?”

Gu Yan grabbed his tie and responded with an even more heated kiss, and asked, smiling, “So, for the sake of sales, you were willing to sacrifice your body?”

“It was purely for work needs.” Qin Zhiyuan still used that official response, he straightened his tie and had that refined appearance again. “I’ve got a dinner to attend tonight, so I won’t be spending time with you.”

Exactly who’s spending time with whom?

Gu Yan was too lazy to bother correcting him, he waved a hand and said, “Safe trip, Master.”

Qin Zhiyuan left laughing.

Gu Yan sank ever deeper into the couch and continued watching TV. The show that he had a major role in had completed just a few days ago, his new show had not yet started filming, so he had spent the last couple of days lazing about the house. He only picked up his manager’s call at noon, who said that they were getting somewhere with that endorsement deal they’d talked about a while ago, and told him to go to the audition this weekend. Before he hung up, he specifically mentioned that President Qin had spent quite a bit of effort on it, and taken the manufacturers out for a meal several times, etc, etc.

Gu Yan then understood this was Qin Zhiyuan’s compensation for his quality services.

Squaring the accounts[1]

He had said it before, Qin Zhiyuan had always been this generous.

Gu Yan curled up the corners of his mouth due to habit, then remembered that Boss Qin wasn’t here, and he didn’t need to fake a smile at all.

If he wasn’t smiling, then he only had one default expression. He watched TV for the entire afternoon with a straight face. When it became nighttime, he finally remembered that he needed to thank Qin Zhiyuan. If his business dinner had already finished, and he had time to hurry over, certainly there was another more straightforward way of showing his gratitude.

When he called, the phone rang for a long time before someone picked up, yet it wasn’t Qin Zhiyuan’s voice.

“Hello, who is it?” A clear male voice, the pitch neither too high nor too low, it was refreshing and pleasing to the ear.

If the voice was like the actual person, Gu Yan thought, his looks certainly wouldn’t be bad. He understood Qin Zhiyuan’s preferences only too well, he could almost sketch the outlines of the other person’s face.  But who knew? Maybe it was just a waiter from the restaurant.

While he was zoning out, the person on the other side of the phone inquired a few more times.

Gu Yan hurriedly laughed it off, and said, “Is it a bad time for President Qin to take a call right now?”

“Yeah, how’d you know…”

“No worries, no worries, I had the wrong number.”

Gu Yan leisurely hung up, tossed the phone aside, and sat for a bit in the dark alone. Then he pressed a button on the remote control, and as if nothing had happened, continued to watch TV.

Qin Zhiyuan didn’t make an appearance that night. Two days later, he finally asked Gu Yan to have lunch with him. He didn’t mention a single word about the phone call that day, and of course, Gu Yan left the matter alone.[2]

Hmm, he still had this much professional conduct.

During the weekend, he went to the audition as planned.

It was already set in stone anyway, so he only needed to make an appearance. Gu Yan changed into several differently styled outfits and struck some poses in front of the camera. Since it hadn’t needed much acting skill, the work was completed successfully.

When he went on break and was touching up his makeup, Xiao Chen scampered in and out and handed him some water, he still hadn’t changed his yammering habit, “Yan Ge, I heard that the company is really satisfied with your look, looks like it’s in the bag this time. The clothes from this brand aren’t that well-known, but their designs are really original, and it suits your vibe, I think…”

“JACKY!”

As he kept talking, Xiao Chen’s long spiel was suddenly interrupted by a female voice. The female model partnered with Gu Yan ran to the door in her high heels and dove into the arms of a suit-clad young man.

“I just knew you’d come today!”

“We’re in public, watch yourself.” The man impatiently backed away a step, his tone cold, with a natural air of arrogance. “When will you be done? I’ll take you out for a drive.”

“Soon, soon. I still have one last set of pictures to take.”

They weren’t being discreet while talking, and the gossipy Xiao Chen poked his head out for a bit, came back and prodded Gu Yan’s arm, and said in a low voice, “Yan Ge, it’s President Qin’s little brother.”

Gu Yan stopped short, raised his head, and stared out past the glass. It was without a doubt, Qin Feng. He was a year younger than Gu Yan, tall and slim in build, with very handsome features, but his personality was unbearably arrogant. He’d always looked at others out of the corners of his eyes and seemed like he was spoiled beyond reason.

Completely different from the courteous and refined Qin Zhiyuan.

Every time Gu Yan saw him, he marveled at the miraculous nature of genetics.

On the contrary, Qin Feng was quite interested in him, when their gazes met, he abandoned the young, voluptuous model by his side, and strode over to greet Gu Yan.

Gu Yan, due to courtesy, could only nod at him, “Mr. Qin, it’s been a while.”

“You working?”

“Mm-hmm, almost done.”

“Let’s eat together tonight.”

Gu Yan glanced at the young model not far away, and asked, “Won’t I be disturbing your date with your girlfriend, Mr. Qin?”

“Just a normal friend.” Qin Feng didn’t even blink.

This message though was exactly the same as his brother’s.

Gu Yan thought it hilarious, but still refused, “Sorry, I don’t have time tonight.”

“Then tomorrow night.”

“I’m rather busy every day, I’m afraid Mr. Qin, you would need to make an appointment.”

The look on Qin Feng’s face abruptly turned ugly.

Gu Yan pretended not to see, and as luck would have it, the photographer called him to take some shots, so he said a perfunctory apology, got up, and walked away. As soon as he took a step, Qin Feng’s scornful voice rang out behind him, “My brother’s been busy with his new squeeze lately, chances are he couldn’t make time to see you? Why’re you wasting your time on him?”

Gu Yan paused in his step, and said, “If you mean by Miss Tang…”

“Tang Anna is just a cover. For those in on it, who doesn’t know that my brother’s crazy about some newbie who just debuted? But that little fox is pretty good looking, even his voice is sexy. My brother’s been hiding him all this time, and to keep the reporters from harassing him, he even threw out Tang Anna on purpose as a smokescreen.”

Gu Yan was silent.

Qin Feng took a few steps forward, laid a hand on his shoulder, then tossed out fresh bait, “My brother’s been eating a lot at “Night Song” the past couple of days, I’m planning on going tonight too, don’t know if you’re interested?”

Night Song was a membership only, private club, it was a place that Qin Zhiyuan often frequented.

Gu Yan thought for a while and figured that Qin Feng’s words had 70% truth, 30% falsehood, so he counted one, two, three silently to himself. When he finished the last number, a smile had already appeared on his face. He turned his head and said, “Of course.”

As he spoke, he leaned away slightly, and subtly avoided Qin Feng’s hand, and said, “I’ll be taking some photos first.”

Qin Feng folded his arms and waited on the side. The young model found out that he had canceled their date at the last minute, and of course was unwilling at first, but Qin Feng only frowned, and she became too scared to say anything else.

It was right at dusk when they stopped work for the day.

Gu Yan left Xiao Chen with a few words, then followed Qin Feng, and got into his new sports car. Though the car was good, unfortunately, it was right at peak rush hour, they couldn’t move at all downtown, and they were stuck in traffic several times on the way.

Qin Feng had the temperament of a young master, anything that didn’t go his way would be fully written on his face. Only when they had arrived at their destination, had his expression improved marginally.

The waitstaff at Night Song knew him fairly well, once he stepped inside the doors, they came to greet him with a smile, and led the two of them to an already reserved private room. The dishes were mediocre and weren’t anything especially interesting, but they were dainty and cute and were plated one by one in small dishes, giving one quite an appetite.

Gu Yan basically ate more than he spoke, he didn’t mention Qin Zhiyuan’s name from beginning to end.

Every so often, Qin Feng would pause the movement of his chopsticks to peek at him, he endured and endured, and finally couldn’t stand it any longer, and asked, “You don’t want to know about what’s going on with my brother?”

Gu Yan raised an eyebrow, and asked back, “I came to have a meal with Mr. Qin, what does that have to do with President Qin?”

Rebuffed, Qin Feng was struck speechless, and he took a long time before saying petulantly, “If he brought that little fox along, someone’ll notify me.”

Gu Yan nodded, and said, “The food here is pretty decent.”

Qin Feng had originally planned on provoking him but hadn’t planned on him being completely unmoved, and he ended up with no further opportunity to do anything else. He could only call for someone to open several bottles of foreign wine, and encouraged Gu Yan to drink in all manners of ways, with an attitude of “I will definitely get you drunk.”

Gu Yan wasn’t an eloquent or talkative person and made no effort to decline the alcohol Qin Feng had toasted him with, readily downing it every time.

Qin Feng, of course, drank quite a bit as well. His tolerance was average, when he started feeling tipsy, he lowered his head to play with his lighter, “flick”, “flick”,  as he flipped the cap open and shut and open again. Only when there came a knock outside the door, did he abruptly lookup.

“Rap, rap, rap.”

The noise only rang thrice, and then went completely silent.

Gu Yan guessed that this was the supposed “notification”, but he still didn’t say a word and waited for Qin Feng to speak first.

As expected, Qin Feng couldn’t take it any longer, and glanced a few times towards the doorway. All of a sudden, he grabbed Gu Yan’s hand, and said, “You’re so much better looking than that little fox.”

Gu Yan wasn’t humble at all and immediately thanked him.

Qin Feng then pressed even closer, his hot breath next to Gu Yan’s ear, “My brother’s always been the type to ditch the old in favor of the new[3], why do you have to be so hung up on him?”

Gu Yan heaved a sigh, and spoke as if talking to himself, “Who doesn’t like the new and hate the old? If the old one hasn’t been abandoned yet, it’s only because they haven’t met anyone better.”

Qin Feng couldn’t make out what he had said clearly, only leaned in closer with all his might and raised a hand to stroke Gu Yan’s face, “I’ve always liked you, if you want to be with me, it’ll be much better than being with my brother.”

“Sure, when I break up with President Qin, I’ll consider you first.”

“You…!” Qin Feng got angry easily, even when he didn’t drink, now that he felt the effects of the wine, his temper flared instantly. “You ungrateful little![4] You’re just the leftovers[5] that my brother has gotten tired of, he’s about to ditch you any second, and I can’t have some fun with you?”

As he spoke, he aggressively kissed him.

The strong stench of wine engulfed him, and Gu Yan felt like sighing again.

Fancy Young Master Qin chasing behind those young models and singers all day long, and his kissing was still this bad?

His right hand was in Qin Feng’s grip, he was only able to move his left hand, which slowly slid up to Qin Feng’s shoulder, and he began to return that kiss. His eyes were half-closed, and he kissed fervently and tenderly, and even twirled his tongue around Qin Feng’s and entangled them together.

Qin Feng was enjoying it at first, then he couldn’t catch his breath, then after that, even his knees were growing weaker, and he almost lost his grip on Gu Yan’s hand. Just as he was savoring the kiss, he suddenly heard a “crash”, it was the sound of someone smashing a wine bottle.

Qin Feng sobered up quickly, he opened his eyes and saw that Gu Yan brandished half a broken bottle at him with a grin, the sharp edges of the broken glass reflected a frigid light.

He couldn’t help but draw back, but behind him was the wall, and Gu Yan’s hand was still draped around his neck. Gu Yan kissed him again, and as his lips grew hotter, the bottle inched closer, it swung to and fro next to his cheek and made him tremble with fear.

Qin Feng wanted to put up a fight, but he had just drunk, and his body wouldn’t obey him at all, he could only shout, “What are you doing?”

“Didn’t Young Master Qin want to have some fun with me? I’m having some fun with you.” As Gu Yan kissed him, he pressed his knee to the important member at Qin Feng’s lower half. Even without any acting, the expression in his eyes was seductively beguiling.

Qin Feng could only feel his whole body run cold, and as he watched the wine bottle in Gu Yan’s hand slowly inching lower and lower, he yelled in a panic, “Stop messing around! If you dare move again, I’ll yell!”

“Yell what?” Gu Yan asked in amusement, “Molester[6]?”

Qin Feng glared at him furiously, working hard to arrange a fierce expression, but his body was shaking.

Gu Yan made a “heh” sound, and said, “Turns out Young Master Qin can’t really have fun after all.”

He carelessly tossed the smashed bottle away, and carefully straightened Qin Feng’s wrinkled suit, thoroughly groping the young master from top to bottom. He then breathed next to his ear, and whispered, “Learn a little, this is what sexual harassment actually is.” +

[2] The idiom here means to “neither hear nor ask nor think about it” literally, meaning Gu Yan didn’t bother bringing the matter up and left it alone

[3] “Ditch the old in favor of the new” is a Chinese idiom, which is mostly used to imply fickleness in love

[4] Qin Feng actually said, “I’m giving you face and you’re not taking it!” It’s a Chinese idiom for saying someone is being ungrateful.

[5] The term used here is actually “raggedy shoe”, which is a derogatory term for someone (usually women) who were abandoned or dumped in love, the “raggedy” part refers to them no longer being virginal

[6] The term that Gu Yan actually used here, “非礼”, literally means “breaching etiquette”. Gu Yan is actually making fun of Qin Feng here because this term is extremely antiquated in ancient China that was almost exclusively used by women when they wanted to protest any breaching of Confucian etiquette (such as holding the hand of a non-family member male)

Flower Vase: Chapter 2

Flower Vase: Chapter 2

The ice-cold Gu Yan was smiling.

He sat comfortably in the car, he’d already practiced the curvature of his mouth in the mirror countless times, it was absolutely flawless. Of course, to get into his benefactor’s good graces, he would need to do his absolute best to play the part of the flower vase.

Qin Zhiyuan was, as expected, very pleased.

“How did your hair get wet?” Thin, long fingers glided past Gu Yan’s temples, lightly fiddling with his raven black hair, aside from the deep voice, it made for a particularly cloying atmosphere.

Gu Yan relaxed his body, and obligingly closed his eyes, “Just finished shooting the suicide scene in the bathroom.”

“Tired? I’ll take you home first.”

“You don’t need to, it’s normally rare for you to have time.”

“I’m off tomorrow.” Qin Zhiyuan laughed quietly, and said close to Gu Yan’s ear, “I can spend the entire night with you tonight.”

Gu Yan opened his eyes, gazed at him, and asked, “Does the Big Boss not have ten thousand things to take care of?”

“I just got back from overseas, I would need to recover from my jet lag.”

Gu Yan suddenly remembered the few paparazzi shots from the magazine.

Was it someone similar?

Or had he already learned to split himself into two?

But Gu Yan didn’t expose him, only smiled appropriately.

Qin Zhiyuan wrapped an arm around his waist naturally, first instructing the driver to turn the car around, then called to cancel the restaurant reservation made earlier on, and lowered his head to ask him what he wanted for dinner.

Ah, this man was just so tender and caring. Even though he was the one who was spending money keeping lovers around, he could still act so smoothly and flawlessly[1], that no one could say a single bad thing about him.

At the same time, he was just as generous to every single lover.

So generous it made one gnash one’s teeth[2].

Curled up in Qin Zhiyuan’s arms, Gu Yan ground his teeth. While he thought and thought, he actually became slightly sleepy.

He hadn’t had many scenes today, but after having gone through multiple takes of the same shot, and soaking in cold water for half the day, he really was completely spent. Which was why, while his benefactor was all gentle words and soothing talk, there he was with yawn after yawn, and drowsily began to dream.

In his dream, he was filming again.

A simple, simple line, but for some reason, he just couldn’t recall it. The director was beyond furious and flung the script roughly at his face.

Slap!

Gu Yan’s heart clenched, and he woke up with a start, he finally noticed that the car had stopped moving. The sky outside the windows had already darkened, the gloom made it difficult to tell the time. He remembered what had happened earlier, panicked inside, this was bad, now he’d gone and smashed his own billboard[3], but just as he lifted his head, he met Qin Zhiyuan’s face.

This face couldn’t be considered attractive, the features only regular, when he smiled, there were a few faint creases by the corners of his eyes, which gave him a rather gentle appearance.

If someone were to have just woken from a nightmare and was shivering due to having been frozen by soaking in chilly water, it would have been very easy to be enamored by this gaze.

Gu Yan suddenly very much wanted to caress Qin Zhiyun’s eyes.

He was normally quite controlled, and would never have overindulged, but just then he could deceive himself, and so, in a half-awake, half-dreaming state reached out his hand.

Qin Zhiyuan had sat with Gu Yan for several hours, half his arm was already numb, but he was still very patient, allowing Gu Yan’s lightly chilled fingers to cover his eyes, and asked, “What do you want for dinner?”

Gu Yan’s response didn’t answer his question. “Half a month.”

It didn’t matter if he was truly busy or falsely busy, truly out of the country or falsely out of the country, it had been an entire half month since they’d met up with each other, that was the truth.

The look in Qin Zhiyuan’s eyes immediately intensified, he nipped down on Gu Yan’s snowy white wrist. In the beginning, he bit down hard, then gradually relaxed his strength, slowly licking at the teeth marks that he had just made, his movements filled with obscene implications.

Gu Yan’s fingers felt numb and ticklish at the same time, even the pain turned into pleasure, and he leaned forward to meet Qin Zhiyuan in a kiss.

It was far too cramped in the car, but it allowed the two of them to be joined together even more intimately, like beasts who were born for their baser instincts, rocking, and entangling without a care in the world.

Gu Yan was shoved against the leather seat, his legs bent back at an unnatural angle, bearing with Qin Zhiyuan’s thrusts again and again. The feeling emanating from his lower half was too intense, making him moan and pant helplessly as if he had gone back into the water, rising and sinking to the point of suffocation. In the jumbled crisscross of light and shadow, he obstinately reached out his hand, touching the eyes of the man on top of him, and willingly sank into the depths.

After they’d finished their lovemaking in the car, they did it one more time when they got back to Gu Yan’s place.

This time it was Gu Yan who took the lead, he went with Qin Zhiyuan’s favorite position, riding on top of him wantonly, moving his hips and playing with his own body at the same time, then crying out when he climaxed… as lewd as anyone could want.

After they were done, Qin Zhiyuan lay on the bed panting, perfectly content, “What’s going on? You seemed to be really wild today.”

Gu Yan grinned and replied with a question, “Did the Big Boss, not like that?”

Qin Zhiyuan’s answer was to kiss him until their bodies became heated once again, then Gu Yan said unconcernedly, “Heard that I’ve recently fallen out of favor.”

“Heard?” Qin Zhiyuan’s gaze stopped short, his expression remained flawless, “From whom?”

Gu Yan lightly voiced a certain actress’s name.

Qin Zhiyuan couldn’t help but laugh. “You believe the stuff from those tabloids? I did share meals with Tang Anna a few times, but it was entirely because of work requirements.”

“So, you’re saying, she’s not your new girl?”

Qin Zhiyuan answered rather tactfully, “The one who’s in my arms right now is you.”

Neither an admittance nor a denial, and left plenty of ambiguous space, completely free for your imagination to run wild.

This was his usual style, Gu Yan understood in his heart, this was the most that he could ask. If he inquired further, he would be crossing his boundaries. Regardless of whether Qin Zhiyuan wanted to keep two lovers or twenty lovers, none of it had anything to do with him.

He was only a kept man, that was all.

The benefactor was charitable and generous, allowing him to have both the fame and the fortune, which was why he really needed to remember his place at every moment. He should smile when it was required for him to smile, and pretend to be dumb when it was required for him to be dumb.

Obviously, he couldn’t provide this kind of service while building the emblematic structure[4], could he?

The more Gu Yan thought of this, the more amused he became, he couldn’t hold back and finally broke out in laughter.

Qin Zhiyuan tenderly rubbed his sweat-dampened back, and asked, “The film that you’re acting in now should be completed soon, right? What work do you have planned after that?”

“…It’s a period drama, I’ll be acting as the stoic assassin.” It wouldn’t require too many facial expressions, which suited him rather well.

“Recently, Zhao Xin is planning a new movie, I’ve read the script, the writing is pretty interesting. Even though it’s not really commercial, chances are that it’ll get awards, do you want to try it?”

Gu Yan replied without even mulling it over, “No.”

“Such a diva?” Rather than becoming angry, Qin Zhiyuan liked his willfulness, “Just because last time Old Zhao scolded you and said that you were like a block of wood, you’re mad?”

Weird, was he a tyrant?

Why did everyone think he’d fly into a rage at the drop of a hat?

“Director Zhao was just speaking the truth, how could I be mad? Except I only act as the main character, you think Director Zhao would agree to that?”

Qin Zhiyuan recalled the last time, Zhao Xin had been livid with anger, and thought that it was really unlikely, then said, “Oh well then, let’s go to sleep.”

After saying that, he pulled the quilt over the two of them, and also carefully tucked the corners around Gu Yan for him.

Gu Yan didn’t have work until the following afternoon, but as he’d already napped in the car, he was unable to sleep, no matter what. He raised his head to look at the clock hanging on the wall, it was already three in the morning. So, he lay quietly in bed, his eyes open as he listened for movement around him. When he’d figured out that Qin Zhiyuan had fallen asleep, he got out of bed and threw on some clothes, and went into the kitchen to drink some water.

“Bzzzzt…”

By the time he returned to the bedroom, a cell phone had begun to buzz so that even the pile of clothes tossed on the floor vibrated faintly alongside.

What scared Gu Yan the most was the midnight phone call, generally, it was never anything good, but he resigned himself to his fate and bent over, he fumbled in the pile of clothes, but what he finally held ended up being Qin Zhiyuan’s cell.

The caller id showed the two words, Tang Anna.

Not a new sweetheart, then a midnight call from a…female confidante[5]? He then glanced at the missed calls, more than ten calls, every single one had Miss Tang’s name.

Gu Yan felt his head begin to ache a bit. He looked at the pitch-black night skies outside the window and quietly waited for the glow from the cell phone screen to dim. Then he picked up and folded the clothes one by one, nonchalantly tucking the phone away, lifted up the quilt, and lay back down next to Qin Zhiyuan’s side.

Qin Zhiyuan was woken up by the aroma of food.

The place next to him had been empty for a while, he looked at the already brightening skies, and finally remembered that he’d forgotten to eat the previous night. He picked up the clothes next to the bed to put on, washed up, and went to the living room. He didn’t see any take-out ordered by Gu Yan, but he did hear bustling sounds from the kitchen.

Qin Zhiyuan went to stand by the door, watching Gu Yan hurry about, and was mildly perplexed.

Gu Yan didn’t go into the kitchen easily.

When he was younger, he had aspired to be a chef, his cooking was light years ahead of his acting. Later his dream had fizzled, and so he’d never wanted to cook again. He, himself, said it was because he was lazy, but perhaps it could be better understood as not wanting to dredge up old sentiments.

He’d neglected his cooking for a long time, but his movements were still skillful. It hadn’t taken much time for him to prepare a table full of dishes. It was mostly normal homemade food, so the taste and smell didn’t bear mentioning. The most notable dish was the bowl of lush green soup noodles. The soup base was boiled from chicken broth, with slices of mushroom and ham for added flavor, giving off a thick scallion fragrance. When stirred by chopsticks, there wasn’t a single strand of noodle to be seen, but instead was full of tubes of lushly green scallions with the tops and bulbs removed. Only after taking a bite, would one know that the noodles were completely stuffed inside the tubes of scallion, it left a rich, memorable aftertaste that lingered in the mouth.

Qin Zhiyuan sat down and tasted a few bites, and could only admire how flavorful it was, he couldn’t help but ask, “How come you made this today?”

Gu Yan picked up his chopsticks as well and replied, “I couldn’t forget it the last time we ate this, so I learned to make it myself, it’s good that you can help me taste test it.”

The last time he’d eaten this with Qin Zhiyuan, they were vacationing out of town and had ordered the noodles in a restaurant. Qin Zhiyuan had thought it delicious at the time and complimented it a grand total of twice during the meal.

Though it had been such a small detail, it remained crystal clear in his mind.

Qin Zhiyuan’s heart thumped, and replied, “The taste is really good, but it probably wastes too much time.”

A simple bowl of noodles, but the base was freshly simmered, plus the noodles had to be stuffed into tubes of scallion one by one. It took both much care and energy, and the effort involved was obvious.

Gu Yan “hmm”ed through his nose, without betraying his feelings.

It wasn’t easy to please the big boss, one couldn’t be too fawning or too indifferent, how was it possible without giving it some thought? Honestly, it was more exhausting than being yelled at in the studio on set. While he couldn’t manage to love every career he took, he should still at least remain professional.

So, it was good that Qin Zhiyuan was appreciative, and completely finished the bowl of noodles. Afterward, he even commented slightly ruefully, “It’s a shame that I don’t get many chances to taste your cooking.”

Gu Yan raised his head with a smile, but before he could’ve opened his mouth to respond, he heard the sound of a cell phone as it began to vibrate again.

Qin Zhiyuan had placed the phone on the table earlier, he turned to look and immediately saw the name of that Miss Tang.

Gu Yan didn’t even steal a glance at the phone, only acted as if he hadn’t heard a thing, one of his hands still held his chopsticks, the other stretched across the tabletop, and gently landed itself on the back of Qin Zhiyuan’s hand. He maintained the smile on his lips, winked, and said, “It wouldn’t be interesting if you play the trump card too often.”

Qin Zhiyuan mulled over the implications in those words, stared at him thoughtfully, and started laughing with him.

There was another unanswered call.

After the light from the cell’s screen had dimmed, Qin Zhiyuan held Gu Yan’s hand back, his tone was impeccably affectionate, “You still have to film this afternoon, right? I’ll take you.”

Translator’s Comments: Am I seriously the only person who’s wondering about how anyone can eat that much scallions? It’s a whole bowl of scallion wrapped noodles, fer crying out loud…

Proofreader’s Comments: I like, no love scallions, but holy hell that’s a shit ton of scallions to eat, and just imagine the smell of your breath for the rest of the day.
But am I the only one who wants to make a doll of the seme and stick pins in it? He’s such an asshat!

Xiao’s Comments: I love scallions, the more, the better~

Translator’s Notes:

[1] The literal wording here is “exquisite from eight sides” and “without a single drop of water leaking through”. The two idioms imply that seme-kun is really slick, and acts in a way that leaves no loose ends so others can’t find any faults.

[2] The literal meaning here is “make one’s teeth itch”. It is usually associated with intense hatred or dislike, hence the closest English equivalent would be “to make one’s teeth gnash”.

[3] To “smash one’s own billboard” is a Chinese idiom implying that you ruined your own reputation through your own actions.

[4] This refers to a well known Chinese saying, “既要做婊子, 又要立牌坊“。 literally, “To want to be a whore, and want a monument in her name.” In ancient China, it was common for people to build monuments to applaud the chastity and faithfulness of women who didn’t remarry when their husbands died. Thus, to be a whore and want the monument implied hypocrisy, as the woman wanted to be both “promiscuous” and to be well known for chastity at the same time. Gu Yan basically uses his own version of this, to say that he could not be Qin Zhiyuan’s sugar baby and have the same expectations of a proper boyfriend to Qin Zhiyuan

[5] The closest English equivalent here for “红颜知己” is “female confidante”, but in Chinese, the implication is much murkier. This explicitly references the woman in a relationship between a man and a woman, where the man can share with the woman all of his secrets and thoughts, making her much more significant than what’s expected of a normal friend. There is typically no sexual relationship involved between the two, and the Chinese will often think of this sort of relationship as someone more than a friend but less than a lover.

Flower Vase: Chapter 1

Splash.

Gu Yan had soaked in the icy water for too long, when he broke the surface, he only felt waves of dizziness, even the sound of the director yelling “cut” seemed unusually far away, sounding slurred and unreal to him.

The new assistant, Xiao Chen[1] , rushed over holding a large towel; he wrapped the towel around Gu Yan’s wet body as he excitedly yelled, “Yan Ge [2] , Director He said this take passed.”

That voice was much too loud, its reverberations made his eardrums ache.

Gu Yan narrowed his eyes, and quietly “hmm”ed in reply, a faintly nasal tone was carried in his throat. His head full of black hair had already been completely soaked, droplets of water rolled down his alabaster cheeks. Under the bright studio lighting, his whole face glittered, as if glowing from an internal light, he was heartbreakingly beautiful.

In truth, Gu Yan’s appearance wasn’t at all girly. But the mix of his pitch-black eyes, straight nose, and delicate features could only be described with the word “pretty”.

With such beauty in front of one’s eyes, who couldn’t help but fall in love?

Even the director forgot about his dreadful acting from earlier and hurriedly called for someone to pull him out of the water, appeasing him with a few appropriate words of reassurance.

Gu Yan was his usual, quiet self, after he’d made sure his part was completed for the day, he said goodbye to the director, then headed towards the lounge with the large towel around him.

Xiao Chen hurriedly followed after him with his incessant chatter. “Yan Ge, Director He had a really ugly look on his face just now, I really thought he’d throw a fit…but since you were in the water for so long, won’t you get sick? You better take a hot shower when you get back, or else…”

Gu Yan ignored his prattling, and leisurely changed his clothes, toweling his hair as he packed his stuff up, then he took a glance at the entertainment magazine he’d indifferently picked up from the table.

Nowadays, magazines were making up more and more ridiculous gossip for the sake of selling subscriptions. The last issue said that some actor had a kid out of wedlock who was in high school. The issue this time claimed that some actress was making frequent public appearances lately, and was becoming the new IT girl; it was suspected that she was the new sweetheart of some high-level executive of a management agency. The vivid descriptions, paired with some blurry paparazzi shots, really made the whole thing seem real.

New, sweetheart?

Gu Yan’s eye twitched, and he hurriedly pressed his hand on his eyelid, he tossed the magazine back to its former place. He said to Xiao Chen, “I’ve got something going on later, so I’ll be leaving first, go back to the company by yourself.”

“Yes, yes.”

Even though Xiao Chen was a chatterbox, he was sweet-tempered and obedient, he followed behind Gu Yan the entire way as the other walked out.

When they were almost at the door, Gu Yan suddenly stopped in his tracks.

Xiao Chen almost collided with his back, and quickly asked, “Yan Ge, what’s wrong?”

“My phone…I forgot it in the lounge.” Just a few rumors in the magazine had made him absent-minded.

Actors couldn’t leave their phones carelessly lying about. Before Gu Yan even asked, Xiao Chen, volunteered loudly, “I’ll go get it!”

He was already hurriedly running back before he’d finished talking.

When Xiao Chen arrived, he saw that the door to the lounge was ajar, bits of conversation drifted out from inside the room. There were both male and female voices, Xiao Chen recognized one of the supporting cast from the show, a female star who’d been paired with Gu Yan not too long ago, and shared multiple blooper reels with him[3].

“…And they all say he’s a huge star. Who would think that his acting skills are so shitty? It’s thanks to Director He having good manners, or else he’d have flipped out[4] right then and there.”

“Haha! Didn’t you know he’s famous for being a flower vase[5]? No matter what role he takes, it always turns out exactly the same. But the guy’s got a rich backer, so he takes the main role in every film.”

“It’s just because he has a good-looking face.”

“Pfft, how would you know he’s not good enough in bed?”

Waves of mocking laughter followed.

Though no one named any names, even a fool could tell who they were talking about.

Xiao Chen was still young, he hadn’t been an assistant for long either, and had never encountered this sort of thing before. He instantly froze in the doorway and didn’t know whether to go in or leave. While he stood there at a complete loss as to what to do, a hand abruptly reached over his shoulder, and gently pushed open the lounge door.

The laughter suddenly cut off, as if a hand had throttled the throats of all those people inside.

Gu Yan stood in the doorway with his arms crossed, his hair was still slightly damp. He asked, “My phone?”

Xiao Chen answered dazedly, “I, uh, I didn’t get it yet.”

Gu Yan nodded, pointedly ignoring the awkward expressions of the group. He walked inside without hesitation and picked up his phone. Then he looked around, a faint smile emerging on his handsome face, “Excuse the intrusion. Please continue, everyone.”

Then he left affably, pulling Xiao Chen along with him. His composure was utterly impeccable.

It took a long while for Xiao Chen to return to his senses, he asked apprehensively, “Yan Ge, you… you aren’t mad?”

“Mad about what?” Gu Yan pondered briefly, and as if he’d finally remembered something, he replied, “You mean the part where they were complimenting me? Hmm, I also thought the word choices were a bit boring, they should have at least added a couple more adjectives.”

“……”

Xiao Chen was instantly rendered speechless, seeing that Gu Yan’s expressions were unchanged from usual, he was unsure if this was some kind of cold joke[6], and dared not say anything else.

Gu Yan hadn’t driven here today, he just stood at the front door and made a call. It didn’t take long before a black sedan slowly turned into the driveway. After the car came to a complete stop, the driver got out and opened the door to the back seat.

Gu Yan waved at Xiao Chen, then ducked down into the car.

Xiao Chen could tell that this was a company CEO’s ride. From his angle, he could just see that there was already a man sitting in the car. The man was dressed immaculately in a suit and tie, his features blurred by the dim lighting in the car. But his fingers were tapered and strong, and they tightly gripped onto Gu Yan’s left hand.

Gu Yan didn’t resist.

Instead, the corners of his mouth curved upwards, and like the most gentle and sweet of lovers, he began to smile languidly.

Slam!

Once the car door closed, the car drove off.

Xiao Chen tsked under his breath and thought that there wasn’t much wrong with what those people in the lounge had said.

What did it matter how shitty his acting was on set?

If the act could thrive off-set, then it was enough.

Translator’s Notes:

[1] Chen is actually called, “Xiao Chen”, with the “Xiao” as a prefix literally meaning “little/small”. It’s a common endearment for junior employees or younger acquaintances to be known by “Xiao” in front of their surnames indicating their “lower” status.

[2] “Ge”, literally “older brother”, a term of endearment in Chinese for a slightly older male figure; it can also be a show of deference and/or respect towards said older male.

[3] The Chinese term is “NG”, which stands for “Not Good”. In the Chinese film industry, it indicates when an actor corpsed or messed up during a take, and the footage is typically used for blooper reels.

[4] The term used here is actually literally, “flipped the table” in Chinese, but it means to throw a fit, and since “flipped the table” means something completely different in English, I thought it would be better to use “flip out” instead, as it’s closer in meaning.

[5] “Flower vase” is a Chinese term that refers to actors or actresses in films who are mediocre in terms of acting ability but are super gorgeous. Basically, they exist solely to be pretty to be looked at and not much else, hence, a “flower vase”, (pretty to look at but useless). A close equivalent in English would be “eye candy”.

[6]  “Cold joke” is a type of joke in China that’s a joke by not being funny at all. It usually utilizes really awkward or lame humor, that it makes the audience shiver instead of laugh because of how bad the joke is. A close English equivalent is something like a dad joke.

Chapter 34

(If you’re not reading this at our wordpress at: xiaoyaoiplayground or our wattpad account then this translation has been reposted without our permission. Please read this story at: https://xiaoyaoiplayground.wordpress.com/)

The yao ren still had that dazed, confused look on his face, “Master?”

Bai Tan shut the door with a “bang” sound, and he looked at the few underlings who were there, then asked in a low voice, “That yao ren, has he been in the cabin this whole time and never went out?”

Li Wuzhang heard him asking such a thing, and felt a bit weird inside, then he answered truthfully, “This subordinate chased after the Sect Leader last night, all the way to Loulan and has just returned to the ship, I don’t really have this information.”

Ji Du spoke, “This subordinate has been waiting on board the ship for news, and didn’t see the yao ren come out at all. Why is the Sect Leader asking such a thing?”

But as he spoke those words, he thought no one knew but earlier, he had helped shizun “secretly crossed the Wei River at Chencang[1].” He had used so much effort just to lure the few people left aside, it had been tiring enough to choke him, so the little evildoer better not become suspicious of it. Thinking back to Wu Yanfu’s bright and joyful face, Ji Du’s eyes couldn’t help but linger on Bai Tan’s body for a bit. “Never came out?” Bai Tan frowned, then was the medicine-blood smell from earlier really only his imagination?

Could he have been too thirsty? He gulped down a mouthful of saliva and felt his mouth becoming a bit too dry, he really hadn’t taken any of that blood for several days. But just as he wanted to cross to the door and go in, Gui Yu’er walked up to his side and spoke softly, “Sect Leader…”

When Bai Tan saw her look of wanting to say something but hesitating to say it, his heart jumped a bit, in both fear and worry. He quickly followed her to the side, “Aunt, what is it? Could my alluring bone have once again…?”

Gui Yu’er nodded, “Could the Sect Leader let me have a look at your alluring bone?”

Bai Tan hesitated for a while, then walked into a cabin, he waited until Gui Yu’er closed the door before he lowered the wedding robe down to his waist. A vivid, branching epiphyllum tattoo leaped into Gui Yu’er’s sight and she was a bit stunned, then took out a handkerchief to wipe away the blood stain on the tattoo. Seeing how bright and charming the youth’s alluring bone was, she squeezed on it boldly.

“You…” Bai Tan turned his head around and Gui Yu’er withdrew her hand, her expression became extremely horrible in an instant.

She took a step back and inhaled deeply. She then turned around, as red slightly surrounded her eyes.

“What is it?” Bai Tan put the robe back on and asked nervously.

Gui Yu’er closed her eyes and clenched onto the handkerchief in her hand tightly, it felt like her heart was being cut by blades. This pitiable nephew of hers…

Also had to have this kind of fate.

“Aunt?” Seeing that Gui Yu’er’s back and her, not letting out a single sound or word, the uneasiness within Bai Tan thickened more and more.

“Sect Leader…have you been hurt by love? Has someone ever betrayed you?”

The corner of Bai Tan’s lips quivered, “Naturally…never. What?”

“Then why… has your alluring bone changed like that already?” Gui Yu’er’s voice had a slight tremble to it as she spoke each word slowly, “I was originally wondering why, even though Sect Leader’s alluring bone hadn’t matured, yet the charms on you were already this heavy, so that’s how it is. Everyone says that us, rao ren, are like foxes. Lustful and perverted, which is why many of us are actors[2] and prostitutes. But they don’t know foxes have extremely deep emotions for love, and rao ren’s are the same. Once our hearts move for someone, then we would love that person for the rest of our lives. But if we were to be betrayed by that person, then our alluring bone would have a pathological change. Normal people won’t be able to tell, but since I’m also a rao ren myself, I can see through it clearly.”

“Love…” Bai Tan showed no expression, and no ripples appeared his eyes either, “If the alluring bone has a pathological change…what will happen?”

Gui Yu’er turned around and grabbed onto one of his hands, her fingers were ice-cold as she squeezed onto it extremely tight.

Bai Tan was in a bit of pain from her grip but didn’t struggle as he let her flip his hand over, one of her fingers traveled from his lifeline and down. Then she stopped at the start of his thumb…then for the rest of the line, there was…none left.

Gui Yu’er’s brows quivered once, a teardrop fell into the youth’s palm soundlessly.

Bai Tan’s heart warmed up, thinking about it, a person who would actually shed tears truthfully for him in this world now, would just be this one and only blood-related family member of his. He reached out his hand unnaturally, and like an obedient child, he helped the woman in front of him, who looked a bit like his birth mother, wipe the corners of her eyes, “Aunt, don’t cry. Aunt could just tell me straightforwardly, how many years do I have left to live?”

Gui Yu’er shed a few tears in silence, after being quiet for a while, she finally spoke, “Nephew, your Aunt wants to plead with you for something.”

“Go ahead.”

“Find a place like a paradise and live your days in joy…do not get involved in these killing acts of Jiang Hu anymore.”

“So…that means there aren’t many days left?” Bai Tan nodded his head, it was as if he wasn’t talking about himself, since he had asked and answered himself, then he smiled, “Then I must do things as quickly as possible. Get what I’ve wanted into my hands and do what I’ve wanted to do, so that I don’t have to die with regrets. I, Bai Tan’s life is thinner than a paper…heart higher than the sky[3], but what of it?”

Gui Yu’er gazed at the youth’s face within the candlelight, and thought he was really like an epiphyllum, they only bloomed for a short while, but they would be extremely gorgeous. It wasn’t like other items that could stay in this world for a long period, with just an eddy of cold wind, he would wither away.

But he didn’t want to wither away soundlessly, instead, he wanted to be like the wildfire and burn all of this earth’s ground.

She wiped away her tears and smiled along with him, “Didn’t think that your and Aunt’s personality would be quite so similar…that year, your Aunt was also determined, so I’d endured it all up to now, and now my life has gone on for almost enough time. But, before I die, I need to finish a wish of mine first.”

Bai Tan curled his hand back into his sleeve, as he felt his heart soften, just from the feeling that Gui Yu’er was extremely close to him and he asked softly, “Could Aunt’s wish, have to do with that Fu Lu?”

“Naturally. For him, I stole something I was supposed to be guarding and brought shame to the Mandala Sect, so I will help the young sect master retrieve the item. I went under the Mandala Sect at the age of twelve, while the old sect master was still alive, he treated me like he was both my father and master. Then entrusted the priestess position of guarding the sacred treasure to me, yet I made such a big mistake, for a vicious thief…” While mentioning the past events, Gui Yu’er felt remorseful then and coughed a bit, then exhaled lightly, “This is…for the young sect master and also for myself…the shame at Loulan, is an event I can’t forget, for my whole life.”

Bai Tan looked at her attentively, “What did Aunt experience while being in Loulan? If Aunt isn’t willing to talk about it, it’s fine too.”

Gui Yu’er shook her head, “Do you know of the origin of the ‘Demonic Beauty of Loulan’ title?”

Bai Tan shook his head.

“It was because on the birthday banquet of the Loulan king, I killed him and three princes, six officials, slaughtered three hundred of the royal palace’s guards and escaped Loulan. I killed them all to wash away the shame with blood…when I was imprisoned within the Loulan Palace, I suffered shame from the Loulan king daily.” As Gui Yu’er spoke, a mad light shone lightly within her tear-covered eyes, “That Loulan king’s been impotent since he was young, so Fu Lu offered for me to treat his illness. Once the Loulan king’s illness was treated, he immediately stepped up to a high position and became the most powerful official of the country. Then he also took the princess of Loulan as his wife…”

Hearing that, Bai Tan couldn’t bear to continue listening, “Since Aunt has known Fu Lu for such a long time, and he is also the second tang zhu of Yue Yin Palace, do you know anything about the great tang zhu of Yue Yin Palace, Tian Su?”

“Tian Su?” Gui Yu’er mumbled the name once and thought about it thoroughly, “I’ve only gone to the Yue Yin Palace once and didn’t see him in person, but I’ve heard this person’s name…a few years ago, I also heard the thief mention, if it weren’t for Tian Su, then the Yue Yin Palace wouldn’t have fallen to that point either.”

Bai Tan was a bit stunned, “What does that mean?”

“The things he said, I don’t know if they’re true or false either…”

“Go ahead and speak of it, it’s fine.”

“According to his words, Tian Su and your shizun, Wu Yanfu, were really close with each other. When he was still young, and before he had entered the Yue Yin Palace as a disciple, he was actually once a disciple of Wu Yanfu’s. But then, for some reason, he got in touch with the third tang zhu of the Yue Yin Palace, “Ghost Envoy of Soul Hooking” and saved him, then also vowed to be brothers with the other. Like so, this event had angered Wu Yanfu and Wu Yanfu kicked him out of the sect. He beat him hard enough for him to lose memories, and it was the “Ghost Envoy of Soul Hooking” who took him back to the Yue Yin Palace to heal, only then did he barely survive from the injuries. From then on, he settled down within the Yue Yin Palace.”

“So he experienced such a thing, that kind of cruel tactic does sound like that old demon’s style. No wonder he reached out a hand to help me that year…” Bai Tan’s eyes squinted while thinking, and his heart moved a bit.

So then that would explain it, it wouldn’t be so odd if Tian Su had taught him moves from his sect. Could that yao ren really be him?

“But I remember hearing Fu Lu say that day, Tian Su didn’t actually lose his memories, and the painful and bitter experiences of him being kicked out of the sect, were nothing but an act.” Gui Yu’er stopped for a bit, “From beginning to end, it was all a plan set by Wu Yanfu.”

“What?!” Bai Tan couldn’t react fast enough at the moment then.

“He said, Tian Su was a chess piece planted by Wu Yanfu into the Yue Yin Palace. He was his spy and only followed his order.”

Translator’s Comments: Gui Yu’er is so sweet, I honestly wanted to cry when she was telling Bai Tan to live happily and stop being involved with the Jiang Hu. Again, Fu Lu, you scum.

Proofreader’s Comments: It seems, the fact that Wu Yanfu was keeping tabs on him at all times is about to come out. So, what now cutie? The guy you thought saved you, was acting on “That old demon’s” orders.

Xiao’s Comments: I kinda like how Bai Tan keeps on insisting on calling Wu Yanfu ‘that old demon’ even though he, himself, admitted that Wu Yanfu was the most handsome man he had ever seen. It’s kinda like he’s trying to convince himself that he is, by no way, attracted to him or was/still is in love with him, lol. You know, if Ji Du wasn’t such a snake (pun intended), I’ll feel bad for him cause I’m sure Wu Yanfu is ordering him around like a dog to accommodate all his plans. But Ji Du’s such a selfish, backstabbing snake, so, yeah, you deserve what you getting~ Also, fuck you Fu Lu, you scumbag.
